Acerca de esta escucha

An epic new trilogy begins - a tie-in for the milestone 50th anniversary ofStar Trek: The Original Series - that stretches from the earliest voyages of the starship Enterprise to Captain Kirk's historic five-year mission and from one universe to another!

Hidden aboard the USS Enterprise is a secret that has been passed from captain to captain, from Robert April to Christopher Pike to James T. Kirk. Now the return of the enigmatic woman once known as Number One has brought that secret to light, and Kirk and his crew must risk everything to finish a mission that began with April so many years ago.

Nearly two decades earlier, April and his crew first visited the planet Usilde, where they found both tragedy and a thorny moral dilemma. Today the legacy of that fateful occasion will compel Kirk to embark on a risky voyage back to that forbidden world - which is now deep in territory claimed by the Klingon Empire!

Good reader. Got dull at about 1.5 hours.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Lost interest but it started well mostly for nostalgia's sake.

Any additional comments?

Good reader. Perhaps this thing picks up at some point. But I had to move on.

Entertaining...ish

Not bad...not great...but not bad. The story embraced too many trek clichés..but managed to also play around with some entertaining and compelling ideas.

Number One in more ways than one!

It's been a while since I've read a Star Trek novel. I've always gravitated to TOSS because that's what I've grown up on. As I get older, it's harder to find the time to sit down and read. But I always forget a good amount of Star Trek novel are on audiobook. This is perfect for me because I can listen to it while I drive back and forth to work.

Truth be told, I was a little disappointed that it didn't have the sound effects and music from past Simon and Schuster productions. I scoffed at it because I guess I was a spoiled by past audio books. However, a good story will always finds a way to grab your interest.

This tale is about Kirk and crew encountering a past mission that involved one of the Enterprise's past 1st Officer Number One. The author Greg Cox does a good job in weaving a tale that has a lot of call backs to the original series so that this feels like it happened in the original continuity. Often author's will go off the rails, and present something that feels unfamiliar to the franchise. That is not a problem here. If you read Cox's past novels on Khan, then you'll be familiar with some of that same connecting he does here.

Robert Petkoff is really good in presenting the voices to the story. One of my biggest hang ups when a male performer is reading a story involves how he reads female characters. Some try to raise the pitch of their voice. Petkoff does different things to capture women characters. For some he tries to find the pattern of how they speak. You can hear this when he performs the voice of Uhura and Number One. It doesn't take you out of the story.

I'm going to pick up the next two stories. I just hope David Mack's installment of this trilogy is just as good as this one.

Disappointing Series--where's the captains we love

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Almost no time was spent on the current crew of the enterprise--why?

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Put Kirk, Spock and McCoy as the central characters.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I didn't care much for the female voice.

Could you see Captain to Captain being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

no way

Any additional comments?

a disappointing start to a trio of books

UNA!

This is really good story that ties Number One (Una) in with Spock and Kirk. It expands on her after she left the Enterprise. It also fleshes out her early career and how she got to be who she is. We got to see her interact with Kirk and Spock. We got to know more about Robert April as well. I really like the story...like a good classic Trek saga and I can't wait for Book 2!

It was ok, should have been better.

The story was good, Number One was really annoying because she was so good at everything. The fact that she wondered what pronouns the slugs used was stupid nobody actually talks or thinks about that and it dats when the book was written, very 2016 social media talk not Star Trek universe talk.

Not the True 50th Anniversary Celebration

I went into this series very excited. The reviews were good and the idea of a trilogy celebrating Star Trek felt like and adventure I had to be on. The opening draws you into the mystery and there was a lot of promise for what would unfold. Unfortunately though once the story enters the flashback it grinds to a halt. After a few hard to listen through hours it flashes forward again and the story seems to take off again. The flashback is simply just so long, filled with uninteresting characters, and the story is so predictable you are just waiting for the book to get to it's inevitable point. Una or Number One and her Enterprise crew is just so dull. I was interested in a novel about her but she is horribly written here. Once the story goes back to the present with Kirk and Spock my interest peaked again and I wanted to know what was past this cliffhanger. The performance is fine. The female characters still give this actor trouble. His higher pitched take of every female character is grating as it was with the previous novel I heard from him. Overall I can't really recommend this novel even though now I am committed to the trilogy so I will carry on. I can only hope the quality raises with David Mack writing the second book.

Nice surprise!

It was nice to hear something new regarding StarTrek and Kirk and I look forward to the next instalment. There were lots of surprises and I can’t wait for the continuation of the story in the next book.
