Now, nearly ten years later, he knows she is closer than ever to starting her work, as a protector. Knowing this, he tries to prepare himself to let her go when she is called. Will he be able to let her go out on her own? Or will he be pulled into something bigger in order to help her complete her mission?

Original but hallow

The Good: Fantasy books by black authors are hard to come by especially outside of the African themes. I love that these characters are aliens who have chosen the forms of black people. The black culture briefly highlighted in the story was nice. The plot is interesting as well. I like the fated love storyline and giving the villains a voice was cool.
The Bad: From the start the narrator was almost robotic. Breaks were taken at awkward times in a phrase. Many parts were emotionless where there clearly should be emotion. Beyond that the story felt rushed. Often explaining what's going on or why things are important in the midst of the action taking place.
Overall: I enjoyed the book and will read the next.
