Greg Abbott
Acerca de esta escucha
Texas governor and rising star in the Republican Party - one of the first prominent politicians to govern from a wheelchair since Franklin D. Roosevelt - Governor Greg Abbott pens his deeply personal and inspiring life story and proposes a plan to restore America to greatness in what Newt Gingrich calls a "bold and compelling" read.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott lost his ability to walk when a huge oak tree crashed down on his back, fracturing vertebrae into his spinal cord, leaving him forever paralyzed. At 26 years old, he felt that the future he had dreamed of was gone.
But he soon realized that our lives are not defined by our challenges, but by how we respond to them. He went on to overcome his paralytic limitations to become the longest-serving attorney general in Texas history and now governor, all while in a wheelchair.
Greg Abbott waged a record number of legal challenges against the federal government that has come unhinged from the Constitution. He also led legal battles to defend the Second Amendment, the Tenth Amendment, and religious liberty. He personally appeared before the US Supreme Court to defend the Ten Commandments monument on the Texas Capitol Grounds - and won.
Through these fights he realized that his personal story held an important parallel to America's current challenges. The Constitution that forms the foundation of our country has been broken, but the people of this nation remain determined to achieve American greatness. Abbott explains that it is up to us to restore America to its rightful luster and power in the world, emerging triumphant from our stumbles.
In Broken but Unbowed, Governor Abbott describes firsthand what it was like to be on the battlefield in the historic fights that have refined the Constitution and the lessons he's learned along the way, offering solutions that will bring us back a government that lives up to the American Dream.

His fight for the ballot spanned 20 years and twice took him to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Voting is our most important right as Americans—“the right that protects all the others,” as Lyndon Johnson famously said when he signed the Voting Rights Act—but it’s also the one most violently contested throughout US history. Since the gutting of the act in the landmark Shelby County v. Holder case in 2013, many states have passed laws restricting the vote. After the 2020 election, President Trump’s effort to overturn the vote has evolved into a slow-motion coup, with many Republicans launching an all-out assault on our democracy.

It wasn’t long ago that liberal icons, including the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, were against the idea of overhauling the court for political gain. But now, in the Biden era, more and more powerful Democrats are getting behind the cause, claiming the high court is broken and actively dismantling our democracy. Even Joe Biden—who once called court-packing a “bonehead idea”—gave in to the progressive wing of his party, appointing a committee to examine “reforms” to the court after being sworn in as president.

From the moment John Roberts, the chief justice of the United States, blundered through the Oath of Office at Barack Obama's inauguration, the relationship between the Supreme Court and the White House has been confrontational. Both men are young, brilliant, charismatic, charming, determined to change the course of the nation - and completely at odds on almost every major constitutional issue. One is radical; one essentially conservative. The surprise is that Obama is the conservative.

Historia
With Barack Obama's historic election in 2008, pundits proclaimed the Republicans as dead as the Whigs of yesteryear. Yet even as Democrats swooned, a small cadre of Republican operatives, including Karl Rove, Ed Gillespie, and Chris Jankowski, began plotting their comeback with a simple yet ingenious plan. These men had devised a way to take a tradition of dirty tricks - known to political insiders as "ratf**king" - to a whole new unprecedented level.

Finally someone explains it all! Great book!
Excellent book and narration. I never thought I'd be interested in a book regarding politics but this book is well written and makes you think about our country in ways the media doesn't want you to.I have some friends who are constitutionalist and never understood why they were so passionate about it however after reading this book I understand their reasons.

Greg Abbott
I’d recommend this book to anyone who questions the value and the power that the citizens hold in this country. I think he makes a great point that the federal government has lost its way and we the people need to get us back on track.

An inspiring and political enlightening book
This country needs a courageous, visionary and strong character statesman like Greg Abbot to lead and restore the greatness of America back to the founding fathers' vision through his well articulated path.
He is a genuine person, dedicated father and charismatic leader. He transformed the worst that could possibly happen to a person into one of the great inspiring story of recent time. Texas is blessed to have him as its governor; America is blessed to have a future leader like Greg. I hope his book is available in other languages as his unbowed spirit is universal and inspiring to all humanity.
