This book was a very enjoyable listen. The author’s vivid descriptions easily brought the characters to life. Secrets are unearthed in a small town in southern USA, with a twist here and there. The narrator did an excellent job and I had no trouble distinguishing between the characters.

Small Town Georgia

If I'm being perfectly honest, it took about an hour to really get into the book. Jane and Willow started out as very unlikable characters and Malcolm was just a despicable excuse for a human being. As the plot unfolded and the pace of the story picked up, I quickly became more engaged. Characters that I initially had no interest in became more sympathetic and relatable. I'm glad that I stuck with it because it turned out to be quite entertaining. I enjoyed the mystery, suspense and family drama. I would have given the story rating a 5 but the ending didn't quite tie up all of the loose ends for me. Rhett Samuel Price gave a great performance and made Black Bird, Fly! a very enjoyable listen. I would recommend this.

Good Southern Mystery

This is a good, character-driven mystery. It might have been great except for two things: First, although the characters are fully defined, the action and events are not. significant questions remain unanswered at the end of the story.

Second, each chapter begins with a section of pretentious babble -- meaningless sentences with no apparent relation to the story, seemingly included in a failed attempt to make the story more literary.

Rhett Samuel Price's performance borders on melodramatic and his accents aren't exactly accurate. Some are so think that it's difficult to understand, but he does manage to distinguish character voices.

I really enjoyed the story, the way in which it was written, and the narrator. I usually stick with nonfiction or classic literature, but I'm glad I tried something new. I would highly recommend this book. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The author, Scott Michael Bowers, did such a great job with the character descriptions. He made the characters and the small little town seem like people and places you know. The narrator, Rhett Samuel Price, has a variety of voices and accents, making it easy to tell the difference between characters. Price was the perfect narrator for this story!

The small Georgia town of Alexander has something sinister going on. Jane Bolton just buried her husband. Her family finds out about her extra-marital affairs and her youngest daughter, Sassy, leaves only to be kidnapped. A family friend decides to hire an investigator who can get things done, no matter what it takes.

Great mystery!

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author / narrator / publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

The story starts out well and manages to capture audience attention. The characters are defined nicely. The pacing is mostly constant throughout the book. But when the book ends, you are left hanging with a few loose ends. There are a few of the sub mystery plots which aren't addressed at the end. I wonder whether there's going to be a subsequent novella.

I did hate the pretentious "quotes" / word salad at the beginning of each chapter. I've read multiple books recently which do the same thing, dunno why. The quotes seemingly don't have any relevance to the story at hand or add anything of importance. And yet, they are there.

The narration was mostly fine. There were a few instances where the characters sounded overtly dramatic. But other than that, it was alright.

Some mysteries left unresolved.
