Bloomsbury presents Bee Speaker by Adrian Tchaikovsky, read by Rod Hallett, Gabrielle Nellis-Pain, and Adrian Tchaikovsky.

From the Arthur C. Clarke award winner, Adrian Tchaikovsky, comes the third instalment of the DOGS OF WAR science fiction series, a future where genetically engineered “Bioforms” have inherited not the Earth, but the Solar System.

The end of the world has been and gone.

There was no one great natural disaster, no all-consuming world war, no catastrophic pandemic. Only scores of storms, droughts, and selfish regional conflicts. Humanity was not granted a heroic end. Instead, it bled to death from a thousand cuts.

But where Earth fell apart, Mars pulled together. Engineered men and beasts, aided by Bees – an outlawed distributed intelligence – survived through co-operation, because there was simply no alternative.

Fast forward to today. A signal – ‘For the sake of what once was. We beg you. Help.’ – reaches Mars.

How could they refuse? A consortium of Martian work crews gather the resources for a mission: a triumphal return to the blue-green world of their ancestors. And now here they are – three hundred million kilometres from home.

And it has all already gone horribly wrong.©2025 Adrian Tchaikovsky (P)2025 Bloomsbury Publishing Plc

I listened to this within a week of the first two books in this series and found this story much less engaging and eventful. It felt like 80% introduction and then a hurried mini-plot that was hard to follow or care about.

Significantly weaker than others in trilogy

It’s not fair that AT is such a good writer AND narrator. 😂 But in all honesty, I’m not sure I’ve ever been moved to tears by an audiobook before, but this one did. If I could give the narration 6 stars, I would.

The Best of the Trilogy

A Funny and captivating story about a band of bumbling Martians spiced with Adrian's fondness for animalistic empathy.

Best in the series yet!

I really enjoy the exciting sci-fi concepts of this author; I especially love the whole concept of the biomorph characters. Hoping for another in the series. :D

Love the universe of these books.

I really got into this series. I went back and reread the previous two and I enjoyed them as much the second time around. I was happy to see a new bioform set. They are somewhat different than the first set we got to know. I wanted to see how Earth turned out and what happened to its people. It was not what I expected. It was something new to the much explored apocalyptic theme. Bees and bomb shelters are what form this new world. The people of Mars don't have much in common with the native humans they encounter. To many years have passed and Mars has evolved. The Mars delegation is committed to helping no matter the cost. Worth the read!

Really great book. I enjoyed it as much as the the first. I can't speak highly enough about the narration.

incredible narration / great story

Bee Speaker has some of the best characterization and imagery I've experienced in quite some time now. Specifically, BEES and Irae carry this book for me. They are such fun, memorable characters, given the dire circumstances they operate in, and each of their scenes ooze with personality. The Dogs of War books are fantastic and I can't recommend them enough. I will say, with each of them, I'm prepared for that to be the end of the story, and when I turn around there's another book waiting to be experienced. Whether or not that is true this time and Bee Speaker ends up being book 3 of 4 instead of book 3 of 3, I think this story concludes nicely.

A Great Next Step

Felt shorter than previous entries, maybe because there were so *much* interesting background lore hinted that could have filled another whole book. I enjoyed everything here, just left wanting even more. Narration was wonderful and nature varied, though sometimes too quiet to hear during my loud commute

Not quite as ambitious as previous chapters in the “Dogs” series, but welcome nonetheless

The voice work in this is well above average. Having multiple voices doing different parts, all equally good, makes a tremendous difference in the experience. That being said, while Im very glad I read/listened, it might be the low point for me in the series.

I feel like, similar to Bear Head, I didn't care all that much about the characters. But unlike Bear Head, it didn't dive as deep into some of the conceptual stuff, which is why I love AT in the first place. Its hard to compete with Dogs of War

Excellent narration, least favorite of the trilogy.

Nice installment in the series, definitely an homage to A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. But well done and excellent narration.

Another great book by the author
