Thomas Beckett's Days As Chancellor
This fictionalized version of Henry's Toulouse campaign and Thomas Beckett's roll as the king's chancellor and friend is a really interesting and well done look at two of the most pivotal characters medieval English history. The interplay between the characters and tiny details of the scene make it feel more like a play than a recounting of a historic campaign.
For fans of the period, it offers an introduction to the characters and the political workings of an unsettled time, ending with the report from home that the Archbishop has fallen ill and Henry's suggestion that this would be the perfect job for Beckett to take over - and yes, that's a spoiler, but like all the fictional accounts of the Titanic's maiden voyage, the outcome in this one was never in doubt.
This story is part of a series which will, apparently, also deal with Beckett's further adventures as a priest and Archbishop.
If you're interested in English history or the middle ages, this one's well worth your time.
