In September, 1938, with war threatening, seventeen-year-old Emily Flannigan is sent by her parents to Liverpool to board a trans-Atlantic liner. On the voyage she meets a girl fleeing the Nazi persecution in Austria and a prostitute fleeing her sordid London life. Further challenges await once she reaches New England and she has to grow up fast and learn to survive. A further chance meeting with Howard Mortimer, now a British Naval Reservist, leads to a friendly exchange of correspondence throughout the rest of the war, but a misunderstanding prevents them revealing their true feelings to each other. When Emily returns to England, much changed after her years abroad, she has a dead friend’s child in her care and a quest to fulfil for an old lady who once also made a lonely voyage from England to America. Will she ever see Howard again? If they do meet, she suspects he will want nothing to do with her, when he discovers what she has done.
