  • XIANG Biao 项飙is a renowned Chinese social anthropologist and migration researcher known for his studies on global mobility, labour migration and transnationalism. He studied sociology at Peking University in China and completed his doctorate in social anthropology at Oxford University. He has been working there since 2004. Xiang has received several awards for his academic work. In 2008, he received the prestigious Anthony Leeds Prize for his book Global Bodyshopping and in 2012 the William L. Holland Prize for his article ‘Predatory Princes’. His book 跨越边界的社区 (Kuàyuè biānjiè de shèqū), which was published in 2005 under the English title Transcending Boundaries, was reissued as a contemporary classic in 2018. His conversations with the journalist WU Qi, published under the title Self as Method: Thinking Through China and the World (方法自觉：中国与世界的思考框架 - Fāngfǎ zìjué: Zhōngguó yǔ shìjiè de sīkǎo kuàngjià), found an enthusiastic younger readership in China. Since September 2021, he has headed the ‘Anthropology of Economic Experimentation’ department at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle. In this podcast episode, we talk about some of the key ideas and concepts presented in Self as Method, about nostalgia and about the importance of looking closely at what is happening in our immediate neighbourhood, the nearby.
