Acerca de esta escucha

"This book is a page turner! Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. One of the most interesting books I've read in a while." - Josephine, Amazon UK Review

"Mekdela effectively dissects the intersections between race, colonialism, sexism, and fatphobia...this was so easy to read whilst effectively teaching me so much about the ways that fatphobia is ingrained into every aspect of society" - Charlie, Amazon UK Review

"Well-thought out, well-researched ideas...like any good activist, Mekdela doesn't just throw out a tale or two, she offers samples, examples, and perhaps, a solution or two" - Rebecca, GoodReads Review

"Plus-Size: A Memoir of Pop Culture, Fatphobia, and Social Change" chronicles the rise of the body positive movement and body positivity through pop culture reviews and personal reflections. This essay collection illustrates the insidiousness of fatphobia through analyses of film, television, books, and how they affect our perceptions and treatment of others. Altogether, the essays paint a big picture of fatphobia, misogyny, misogynoir, ableism, and capitalism in American society. Furthermore, this essay collection emphasizes the potential for social change. Featuring media from the 1990s, early 2000s, 2010s, and up until today, this memoir tells a story of America's uneasy and ever-changing relationship with fat.

Note from the Author:

Thank you to everyone who reads my book! I began writing this book in 2017, through writing posts for my blog. I was perturbed by the political turmoil and wreckage all around me after the 2016 presidential election, and this spurred me to begin blogging to preserve my memories of my life experiences in real time. This blog became my defacto memoir and contains recollections, creative nonfiction pieces, and pop culture reviews. I later read through my blog and realized I had the makings of a story! And so, my memoir, "Plus-Size," was born. Unique for its genre, I consider "Plus-Size" to be a work of creative nonfiction in addition to a memoir, because it is not exactly like traditional memoirs. I would love to hear from readers about your thoughts; email me at mekdelaauthor@gmail.com. Last but not least, if you enjoyed the book, please leave a review! It goes a long way and I would deeply appreciate it. Happy Reading!
