Craig Johnson has won multiple awards and earned starred reviews from Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and Kirkus Reviews for his New York Times best-selling Walt Longmire mysteries. Embarking on his eighth adventure in As the Crow Flies, Sheriff Longmire is searching the Cheyenne Reservation for a site to host his daughter’s wedding, when he sees a woman fall to her death. Teaming up with beautiful tribal chief Lolo Long, Walt sets out to investigate the suspicious death.

The new characters are a delight. Lolo is great and I really appreciate her interaction not only with Walt but with her mother (who knows how to deal with her). I hope she will be back so we can see her mature into a fine police officer. I missed Vic in this one, but it was good to have Henry back full time. Dog was also a welcome inclusion this time.
Johnson's strength is in his characters. I know these people, and for the most part, I like them very much. I would know them if I met them on the street. I want to know them better, and he allows them to grow. Lonnie (Lonny?) is a much more mature character than he was in The Cold Dish, and I'm enjoying his new responsibilities as much as he is frustrated by them. Yes, it is so.
The plot had me completely in the dark until the last 30 minutes of the audio (or so). It wasn't as all what I was expecting, and that's all I'll say about that!! As usual the plot is logical when worked backwards.
The only thing wrong with the book is that I have finished it. Now I'm going back through the series again, just to reacquaint myself with the people. Then I suppose I'll just have to wait another year for another book.
(Other reviewers have explained the basic plot, so I will refrain from repeating them.)

George Guidall, as usual nails the performance. My mom swears she would listen to George read the phone book.
I suspect Johnson is devoting more time to the TV series than to writing his books these days.
If you are a die hard Longmire fan, maybe listen. If you are a new listener, start elsewhere.
He's done better

What did you love best about As the Crow Flies?
The complex characters were as fascinating as ever. Johnson is even more lyrical than ever. Yes, the story moves a bit slowly--and that is actually part of its charm.Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Subplots were equally interesting to follow. What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
There is NO ONE better than Guidall at reading a book with appropriate emotion, pacing and variety in the character voices.Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both!! An at the right moments. I actually hated to see the story end...my usual reaction to Johnson's books. But, I'll wait patiently for the next installment.Any additional comments?
Read this series from the first book in chronological order. Its very satisfying to see the characters develop. And, if you managed to see the TV series LONGMIRE, then you have had a taste of the rich experience n the book.Another Winner from Craig Johnson

If you could sum up As the Crow Flies in three words, what would they be?
great listening funWhat was one of the most memorable moments of As the Crow Flies?
The introduction of a new character in Chief LongWhat does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Timing, depth and additional humor. He is definitely the voice of Henry. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, my husband and I enjoyed savoring it over a series of excursionsAny additional comments?
Author Craig Johnson has developed a memorable series with Sheriff Longmire, but all the previous books I have listened to have had some confusing plot sequences and tended to linger on overdone self-reflection or description to the point of being repetitive. The books had a lot of loose ends that one overlooked because of the strength of the character development and the engaging and smart writing style. In this book, Johnson pulls it all together in the right balance of plot, character, and humor. It is his best one yet and just plain good fun to listen to. George Guidall is the perfect reader for it as well.Home Run

If you could sum up As the Crow Flies in three words, what would they be?
Darn Good writing! Good writing is when you make it seem so "easy." Great characters, and always a top-notch mystery to solve in a wonderful location. There's always a philosophical bent to the way Craig Johnson writes, and his Walt Longmire character is such a likable, wise, and unassuming man that what he says sticks with you. Like good 'ol horse sense. His friends are just as amazing. The Indians on the "Res", their way of living their lives. They display simple wisdom. It just all works to make this whole series "Different."What other book might you compare As the Crow Flies to and why?
You can't compare Walt Longmire mysteries to any other books because they are unique.Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?
Walt, and really, all of them because they are all so unique, lol.Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, it made me laugh because there is so much irony in the things that are said. There are so many dry and funny things said. Cry? Yes, because sad sides of human nature are exposed.Any additional comments?
I love this series. There are a few series I will always look for and this is one of them.Becoming Addicted To Walt Longmire Mysteries!

What did you love best about As the Crow Flies?
The characters are so real and the story is smooth. The books are suspenseful, funny and charming - all at the same time. What did you like best about this story?
The character developmentWhat about George Guidall’s performance did you like?
Guidall makes the sheriff and native american voices just pop - bringing them to a level of such believability, it's amazing. If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
I have no idea - lol. But my first impression of the book (its cover) wasn't "up my alley" - and now I wonder how many other books I've overlooked due to this. The fact that it's a 'western' shouldn't stop anyone from reading/watching this series.Any additional comments?
Can't wait for the next book - and please George Guidall....keep narrating. :)One of the best series I've ever read
