When my kids were little, I would regularly lose my temper with them, as did my husband. For me, I've realized that much of the problem was how I was raised and treated by my parents. I learned early on that I wasn't allowed to be angry at them. All that emotion was buried for YEARS. When my kids came along, guess what? It came out. I was finally put on anti-depressants, and that took the extremes away, especially the rage. As I was listening to this book I heard so many great ideas and suggestions for ways to handle what my husband and I went through, that made me regret I hadn't read/listened to something like this when they were younger, especially about the lasting close connection, which I don't feel I have now. There's so much to learn about your own behavior that you can change if you want to. If you see yourself through my story, please get this book.

Parenting is rewarding, but it can also be overwhelming. This book presents simple strategies to manage anger, improve communication, and stay grounded when emotions run high.

I really liked the inclusion of self-reflection (and the journaling prompts). A lot of people take that for granted, but it should be part of a routine. It can be really helpful for parents to better understand their own reactions, not just their child’s. I no longer parent younger kids, only adult s who act like kids, lol, so this is my pick for my niece’s parents (she can be a handful, but so can they, lol). Still, the guidance in this book holds true even in my situation.

I’m a big believer that parents should have all the resources they can get their hands on, and this one is fantastic. If you're looking for a solid book with good advice, this is one I definitely recommend.

What I loved is that this doesn’t pretend parenting is sunshine and hugs. It acknowledges how overwhelming it is when you’re exhausted and your kid is on their third tantrum before breakfast. I found the tone really validating and the advice super practical. The part about setting expectations and managing my own nervous system was eye-opening. I didn’t realize how much of my reaction came from being dysregulated myself. Now I have better tools to handle the chaos with a lot more calm.
