Acerca de esta escucha
There are places in the United States of America where violent acts of bloodshed have occurred. Years may pass - even centuries - but the mark of death remains. They are known as Murder Houses.
From a colonial manse in New England to a small-town home in Iowa to a Beverly Hills mansion, these residences have taken on a life of their own, gaining everything from local lore and gossip to national - and even global - infamy. Here, writer Steve Lehto recounts the stories behind the houses where Lizzie Borden supposedly gave her stepmother "40 whacks", where the real Amityville Horror was first unleashed by gunfire, and where the demented acts of the Manson Family horrified a nation - as well some lesser-known sites of murder that were no less ghastly.
Exploring the past and present of more than 25 renowned homicide scenes, American Murder Houses is a tour through the real estate of some of the most grisly and fascinating crimes in American history.

One month later, her naked body stabbed over 30 times and missing both feet and a forearm was discovered on an abandoned farm. A year later, the body of 20-year-old Joan Schell was found, similarly violated. Over the next two years, five more bodies of female students were uncovered around the area.

They live in shadows - deep in the forest, late in the night, in the dark recesses of our minds. They're spoken of in stories and superstitions, relics of an unenlightened age, old wives' tales, passed down through generations. Yet no matter how wary and jaded we have become, as individuals or as a society, a part of us remains vulnerable to them: werewolves and wendigos, poltergeists and vampires, angry elves and vengeful spirits.

1916: Norma Wallace, age 15, arrived in New Orleans. Sexy and shrewd, she quickly went from streetwalker to madam and by 1920 had opened what became a legendary house of prostitution. There she entertained a steady stream of governors, gangsters, and movie stars until she was arrested at last in 1962. Shortly before she died in 1974, she tape-recorded her memories. With those tapes and original research, Christine Wiltz chronicles Norma's rise and fall with the social history of New Orleans.

For 31 years, a monster terrorized the residents of Wichita, Kansas. A bloodthirsty serial killer, self-named "BTK" - for "bind them, torture them, kill them" - he slaughtered men, women, and children alike, eluding the police for decades while bragging of his grisly exploits to the media. The nation was shocked when the fiend who was finally apprehended turned out to be Dennis Rader - a friendly neighbor...a devoted husband...a helpful Boy Scout dad...the respected president of his church. Written by four award-winning crime reporters who covered the story for more than 20 years, Bind, Torture, Kill is the most intimate and complete account of the BTK nightmare

Historia
In the heart of Indianapolis in the mid-1960s, through a twist of fate and fortune, a pretty young girl came to live with a 37-year-old mother and her seven children. What began as a temporary childcare arrangement between Sylvia Likens's parents and Gertrude Baniszewski turned into a crime that would haunt cops, prosecutors, and a community for decades to come. When police found Sylvia's emaciated body, with a chilling message carved into her flesh, they knew that she had suffered tremendously before her death.

Mystery and horror. Poe, who remains one of the most iconic of American writers, died under haunting circumstances that reflect the two literary genres he took to new heights. Over the years, there has been a staggering amount of speculation about the cause of death, from rabies and syphilis to suicide, alcoholism, and even murder. But many of these theories are formed on the basis of the caricature we have come to associate with Poe: the gloomy-eyed grandfather of Goth, hunched over a writing desk with a raven perched on one shoulder, drunkenly scribbling his chilling masterpieces.

Today it is known as Roosevelt Island. In 1828, when New York City purchased this narrow, two-mile-long island in the East River, it was called Blackwell's Island. There, over the next hundred years, the city would build a lunatic asylum, prison, hospital, workhouse, and almshouse. Stacy Horn has crafted a compelling and chilling narrative told through the stories of the poor souls sent to Blackwell's, as well as the period's city officials, reformers, and journalists (including the famous Nellie Bly). Damnation Island re-creates what daily life was like on the island....

Nine wholesome university students mountaineering in the Urals go missing, and are later uncovered from the snows of a bleak forest's edge in the Siberian Taiga, in a series of grisly discoveries. Why were the climbers wearing no boots? Why were stout branches of the forest pines singed to a height of 30 feet? What were the mysterious markings in the bark of nearby trees? What was so-called "overwhelming force" that was capable of breaking eight ribs in a single blow without bruises?

Quite a few triggered international headlines. The first documented female serial killer in the US came out of the tiny state of Delaware, as did a "signature killer" who attracted FBI profilers.

The Anatomy of Motive offers a dramatic, insightful look at the development and evolution of the criminal mind. The famed former chief of the FBI's Investigative Support Unit, John Douglas was the pioneer of modern behavioral profiling of serial criminals. Working again with acclaimed novelist, journalist, and filmmaker Mark Olshaker, and using cases from his own fabled career as examples, Douglas takes us further than ever before into the dark corners of the minds of arsonists, hijackers, bombers, poisoners, serial killers, and mass murderers.

Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Pretty good but if you know a lot about true crime not much new material
I liked the straight talking narrator, who only hammed up the story of the sulton, seeing as it's veracity is in doubt, but I wonder if he could sound just a little more excited, after all these murders are shocking. It took awhile to get used to the summary of the crimes and then a more detailed description-- I assume that format works better in print.

MOre about the murders than the homes
Perhaps this book is best for those who, like myself, do not follow, true crime. If you are a devoted reader and follower of historical murders, and those that enter the modern media sensational sphere, it’s probably all repetitive. It covers murders I have never heard of, and some that everyone knows of like, O.J. Simpson and Jon Benet Ramsey. The book focuses on summarizing the murders and less on the homes they took place in which seems counter to the title. I agree with another reviewer, who, likened it to a Zillow summary of the homes, more focused on the architecture of the home, and the sale prices than anything else. I wish it had gone more into what happens to a home after a murder occurs there in terms of investigation, clean up, and the feelings of those who live there afterwards. I’m not talking in terms of crazy things like haunting, but more in general terms of what’s it like to live in a house, where a murder occurred. He does do this for one or two of the houses, but I wish he had done more. What type of person wants to live there? I do like that he put the effort into debunking myths around some of the houses especially the Amityville house. the reader is new to me, and was good with the material. I like the sound of his voice, So, I would disagree with the negative reviews of his performance.

Worth the listen!!
Overall a very good book. it seemed well researched and easy to follow. If you are interested in history and/or true crime you will very much enjoy this book. I only wish it could have been longer so I'd have more to listen to. The only downside was it sometimes sounded like something was off with the recording and the reader had a bit of an echo. But it didn't affect the story just something you had to get used to.

Fascinating!
I am oddly fascinated by "stigmatized real estate" due to a love of a history and a philosophical curiosity. Is there a residual feeling in these houses? An energy? Why do some people have little difficulty living in such a property while others can't even imagine it? Who lived in the house, what were they like? Why did the crime occur? Could I live in such a home? On and on. This book served my curiosity well offering a tour of many stigmatized properties and the stories behind them with excellent narration. I'd love a sequel exploring more homes that were not necessarily as notorious. Many houses have a fascinating history!

Great story, but what's up with the narration?
Let me just say that the story is great, but the narration is odd. The narrator himself is fantastic, but sometimes it sounds like he's talking from deep in a barrel or something-- it's odd and distracting. I thought, maybe it's my speakers, so I switched... nope, it's the recording. Maybe redo those portions? Especially since we're paying for this book.
