A great course but with one major issue

So Patrick is a fantastic narrator, and this audiobook is well researched and short, but it's incredibly Americentric. Still, for the length and price one can't beat the overall excellence of this work.

Solid, good to see the story all in one place

I lived through all this, and there was nothing here I hadn't seen or thought along the way. But, those with a bent toward history can get the whole period (USA-centric) in a neat package. It is basically the headline stories of those 30 years, from the most basic, popular shared view of events, without a lot of frill.

Overview of US events from Reagan to Trump

I found the lecture to be a good refresher. If someone was in a coma for twenty years since 2001 I would
give them this to listen to. If I was a student in the year 2080 and if I was studying the period between 1990-2020 I personally
would consider the lecture to be a decent secondary source to get started.

I will say the 2nd to the last lecture on pop culture was weak, and the professor has overtly made that clear with his tone, But given the multitude of subcultures and avenues of consumption since the internet/communication revolution, it is kind of expected.

The lecture is worth a listen, but granted please ignore the buzzwords on some of the reviews, Unlike historial subjects such as the roman empire, you still have active players being mentioned in the lecture trying to influence US culture and policy. YMMV.

90 percent leftist view

too much general BS and liberal values. I wish it was pure facts and logic from both sides of the story

History without the boring stuff.

Clear, concise, and an informative reminder of how amazing the last 50 years have been!

disappointed

I listen to lectures during my 4 mile walk every day. Having listened to Industrial Rev and Victorian Eng, by Dr. Allitt, both of which were superb in all aspects, I expected more of the same. Although I was reminded of events that have slipped away and some recent events were clarified, several topics showed a clear bias. Dr. Allitt, English by birth, announced he had become a US citizen. Apparently, he has switched from tea to Kool-Aid.

A overview only

I’ve enjoyed professor Allitt before and I still find him an enjoyable lecturer but his political biases come out here in full swing - he has a clear professional class center left liberal bias. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing and can be still be very informative for people who have no background in the subject but for those who want more of a deep dive or more interesting analysis of the period should go elsewhere.

History is supposed to be facts, not rhetoric.

I have loved Dr. Allitt's courses and have listened to several. This was written as though designed for the modern university - which is to say written with a deliberate and decided bias. I'd be fine with a choice here and there, and I'd forgive a lean - we all have our preferences - but this wasn't good history. History aims to find as much fact as possible and eliminate bias, or at least admit to multiple sides in a discussion. There were no attempts made to write this from anything but an, "honest as possible", left bent.

It's unfortunate, Dr. Allitt is an extraordinary presenter, bringing history to life in ways few others can. I hope future efforts with him will prove more rewarding.
