DI Adams fled London to escape bridge-dwelling monsters and magical toasties - a one-time experience she's in no hurry to repeat. She's police, not some cryptid hunter. Leeds has other plans, though.
Tasked with the seemingly mundane case of a missing necklace, Adams soon realises she's stumbled into something inexplicable. The trinket is dangerous, and she's the only one who recognises it for what it is - a weapon that could tear the North apart.
Juggling unhelpful colleagues, amnesiac witnesses, and problematic women of a certain age, Adams plunges into the treacherous, magic-soaked streets of Leeds. She may not have backup, but at least she has the invisible, caffeine-addicted dog by her side. Plus a duck. And a very big stick. She's got this. She has to. Because there's no one else who can. . .

great story, meh narration
I love Watt's writing, I just wish that the narrator had pre-read the book. She seemed to be stumbling through the narrative for the entire story.

A good follow-up
I enjoyed this urban fantasy mystery novel, it makes a great sequel. I like these books better than the author's others. while not including in your face battle magic like the Benedict Jacka Fated series, it does have a lot of magical elements subtly introduced, with a slow build.
while the narrator was well chosen for this character, she has some weird enunciations, with accents on the wrong syllable or emphasis on the wrong word, and her reading speed changes from really slow reading or slow enunciating, to very fast with the words jumbled together. hard to get a consistent play speed selected.
I'm looking forward to a third book, if there is one.

Terrible narration
I want a refund on the audible version so i can just buy the book because the narration is so irritating I just can’t listen to anymore of it and I’ve barely got past the first chapter. Some sentences are read so fast I can’t keep up then random words are read slow and dramatically for no reason “she picked up ….the……..phone….. and left.” The descriptive text about the surroundings go on forever, maybe somewhat the authors fault but made so much worse be all the false drama added by the narration.
Don’t even let me get started on all the changing accents given to the cast.
If like me a bad narration spoils your immersion into the story skip the audible version and buy the book because this is nails on a chalkboard annoying. I have loved all the stories I’ve read by Kim M Watt and I wish they had stayed with Patricia Gallimore for this series.
