Protégés par un régiment de Marines coloniaux, les colons essaient de terraformer la planète balayée par les tempêtes. Au-delà des conditions de vie extrêmes et des combats journaliers imposés par ce nouveau monde, l'espoir et l'humanité demeurent. Anne et Russell Jorden, deux colons venus chercher les opportunités qui leur échappaient sur Terre, attendent leur premier enfant.
La naissance de Rebbecca Jorden, que sa famille surnomme Newt, est une véritable source de réjouissance. Cependant, en même temps que la colonie croît et se développe, les conflits politiques entre un détachement de quelques marines et les scientifiques de la Weylan-Yutani postés à Acheron, grossissent eux aussi. Prêts à ignorer leurs ordres dans le but de mieux servir les intérêts de l'Organisation, ces scientifiques cachent en fait des intentions beaucoup plus sinistres : ils veulent en secret capturer un alien vivant.
Les prospecteurs découvrent un énorme vaisseau spatial en état de délabrement avancé. Pour la Weylan-Yutani, le vaisseau en forme de fer à cheval est d'un grand intérêt et pourrait être la réponse à leurs prières. Mais ce que Anne et Russell trouvent à bord relève davantage du cauchemar que du rêve…
