300 ans après les événements d'Alien - La Sortie des Profondeurs et Alien - Le Fleuve des Souffrances, Alien - La Mer des Désolations retrace la redécouverte des Xénomorphes (Aliens) en état de sommeil dans les mines abandonnées de LV-178, le planétoïde d'Alien - La Sortie des Profondeurs, désormais transformé et renommé New Galveston. La Weyland-Yutani Corporation, réformée après l'effondrement de l'armée du système des Nations Unies, poursuit ses efforts incessants pour armer les créatures, obtenant l'aide d'Alan Decker, forcé de se joindre à une équipe de mercenaires envoyés pour enquêter sur une ancienne excavation qui se cache sous le désert toxique de la planète, baptisée la Mer des Douleurs.
Quelque part dans ces fouilles depuis bien longtemps oubliées se trouve ce que la compagnie désire à tout prix - un Xenomorphe vivant. Decker ne comprend pas pourquoi l'entreprise a besoin de lui, jusqu'à ce que son patrimoine génétique revienne le hanter. Il y a des siècles, l'un de ses ancêtres a combattu les Aliens, lançant une vendetta sanglante encore inassouvie. C'est à ce moment-là que les créatures ont juré de se venger de son aïeule, "la Destructrice", Ellen Ripley... et de tous ses descendants.
Cette fiction multicast terrifiante - réalisée par Dirk Maggs, célèbre pour ses adaptations du Guide du voyageur galactique de Douglas Adams et de Neverwhere de Neil Gaiman pour la BBC - est la suite d'Alien - La Sortie des Profondeurs d'Audible Originals (nominé dans la catégorie "Best Audio Drama" aux Audies 2017) et Alien - Le Fleuve des Souffrances, qui avait remporté plusieurs prix. Ce titre est une création omnisonore d'Audible : il s'agit d'une fiction jouée par plusieurs comédiens et enrichie par des effets sonores. Aliens pas désolé!
Excellente narration sur une histoire interressante si ce n'est quelques incohérences mineures. Directement lié à un précédent roman, le titre est aussi cohérent avec l'histoire et les événements existants dans l'univers des films.
