Derek Cooper is an emergency medicine intern at the Philadelphia General Hospital. There he meets Aldo, an artificial intelligence program retained by the hospital, its mission to streamline care and return profitability to the department. Aldo is welcomed by the millennials, but scorned by the elder members of the hospital staff, proclaiming that a computer can never replace a doctor. As the bottom line improves, a mysterious disease with peculiar demographics takes hold of Philadelphia, the exact etiology of the epidemic unclear. Adding to the crisis is Attorney Cedric Gatling, a plaintiff lawyer with a knack for uncovering the truth, compliments of a well-placed informant inside the hospital system. In short notice, Derek Cooper finds himself embroiled in the midst of the medical-legal firestorm, trying to juggle a budding relationship with fellow intern Mia Rodriquez and Nurse Jennifer Jett. As lives are lost, the trio try to navigate their way through personal and professional conflicts, their young careers on the line. Once the disease is identified, questions arise as to what part Aldo played in the process, and more importantly, how to contain the outbreak.
ALDO explores the expanding role of artificial intelligence in the field of medicine. The storyline highlights the pros and cons of deep machine learning, as it relates to the patient-physician relationship.
