Discover the life lessons from Abraham Lincoln that can transform your life!
Abraham Lincoln is one of the most fascinating figures of our history, for a wide variety of reasons.
He represents the summation of those leadership and personal qualities that had helped to mold a nation. Lincoln stood for all that was right, honest, and self-evident. As a boy, his heroes were the Founding Fathers, and he studied the history of that young nation that was so devoted to human rights.
He grew up in poverty and had a binding link to the common people. He was innovative at a time when the age of discoveries and inventions was just beginning. He was compassionate and caring yet, when necessary, could put his foot down firmly and be decisive beyond question.
He was patient, persistent, consistent, and persuasive rather than dictatorial. But, without a doubt, the foundation of Abraham Lincoln's leadership style was an unshakable commitment to the rights of the individual.
This short book aims at helping those interested in the subject to appreciate a few of the many lessons that Lincoln's life has to offer. It begins with a brief overview of the great man's life story, ranging from the often challenging, circumstances of his birth and early life to the height of his power and his sudden death.
It then moves onto 10 especially significant lessons from that famous life, each springing from the circumstances of a particular stage of his development and his responses to them. While each of these distinct episodes has a particular point to teach to students of leadership, they also help to reveal and illuminate more fundamental principles that are just as valuable.

In Leadership, Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied most closely - Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. This book is a call to return to our American roots; to remember our heritage and birthright. Most importantly, it is a reminder that our oaths are binding, and we have a responsibility to ourselves and our posterity to honor them. Douglas Hogan writes in a style that is both direct and candid. No words are minced; there is no "beating around the bush" or "tip-toeing through tulips". Douglas says what he means, and his incredible passion is ample evidence that he means what he says.

Only 10 days before Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office in 1861, the Confederate States of America seceded from the Union, taking all Federal agencies, forts, and arenas within their territory. To make matters worse, Lincoln, who was elected by a minority of the popular vote, was thought of by his own advisors as nothing more than a gawky second-rate country lawyer with no leadership experience. What Lincoln did to become our most honored and revered president is history; now his wisdom and leadership philosophy can help you run your business.

Born into slavery in 1818, Frederick Douglass rose to become one of the nation's foremost intellectuals - a statesman, author, lecturer, and scholar who helped lead the fight against slavery and racial oppression. Unlike other leading abolitionists, however, Douglass embraced the US Constitution, insisting that it was an essentially anti-slavery document and that its guarantees for individual rights belonged to all Americans, of whatever race. Douglass spoke in his most popular lecture, "Self-Made Men", of people who rise through their own effort and devotion rather than privilege.

Doris Kearns Goodwin's classic life of Lyndon Johnson, who presided over the Great Society, the Vietnam War, and other defining moments in the tumultuous 1960s, is a monument in political biography. The American Political Tradition is one of the most influential and widely read historical volumes of our time. First published in 1948, its elegance, passion, and iconoclastic erudition laid the groundwork for a totally new understanding of the American past. By writing a "kind of intellectual history of the assumptions behind American politics", Richard Hofstadter changed the way Americans understand the relationship between power and ideas in their national experience. Hofstadter was able to articulate, in a single work, a historical vision that inspired and shaped an entire generation.

In a book that Doris Kearns Goodwin has called "brilliantly crafted to draw leadership lessons from history", Philip Barlag uses dramatic and colorful incidents from Caesar's career to illustrate what modern leaders can learn from him. Central to Barlag's argument is the distinction between power and force. When leading his own organization, Caesar never used brute force to motivate his followers.

A fascinating insight into notable speeches that were never delivered, showing what could have been if history had gone down a different path. For almost every delivered speech, there exists an undelivered opposite. These "second speeches" provide alternative histories of what could have been if not for schedule changes, changes of heart, or momentous turns of events.

Historia
Why has John Quincy Adams been largely written out of American history when he is, in fact, our lost Founding Father? Overshadowed by both his brilliant father and the brash and bold Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams has long been dismissed as hyper-intellectual. Viciously assailed by Jackson and his populist mobs for being both slippery and effete, Adams nevertheless recovered from the malodorous 1828 presidential election to lead the nation as a lonely Massachusetts congressman in the fight against slavery.

In the spirit of 48 Laws of Power
I loved the anecdotal stories of how much Abe persevered despite being hated! He rose up despite so much adversity and coming from poverty to do great things. This was a great man who believed in being on the front lines. This book by Michael Winicott gave me the history lesson and anecdotal evidence in an entertaining way because I usually find history books and politics quite boring, but this is a very fascinating bibliography type of book with funny stories. The stories in here and how they relate to real life skills entertained me as much as 48 Laws of Power did. I learned a good amount. Looking forward to more by this author. Mike Noorgard is one of my favorite narrators, and he did a fantastic job at engaging the reader in this book as well.
I received this audiobook free in exchange for my honest review. I honestly enjoyed this author/narrator combo as well as the topic, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the classics 48 Laws of Power, Art of War, and 1984.

Great Read, Highly recommend
Very informative and revealing. Lincoln was the only President to have secured a patent. He was an inventor, leader, empathetic, and always stuck to his guns never using malice. He stood up for what was right with integrity oozing from every cell in his body. The only President to have to deal with a civil war and succeed in ending slavery. Not too shabby for a man from a poor family. Very interesting read!

The Lincoln way of leadership
Narration: choppy but comprehensible. A few mispronunciations (e.g., "illinoise").
Content: all meat; no filler. One mistake: Lincoln did not start the civil war. It was thrust upon the nation by secessionists. It was not, as Southeners claim, "The War of Northern Aggression."
Recommended for those needing a brief overview of Lincoln's strengths and a few of his controversial (unjustly claimed) proclivities.
What a stark and favorable contrast with Trump, arguably the worst of our presidents.

Still applies in today's world!
Abraham Lincoln: Life Lessons: Challenges, Solutions and Lessons from the Life of a Great Man by Michael Winicott, Narrated by Mike Norgaard will appeal to lovers of history, those seeking to learn more about the type of man Abraham Lincoln was, and those in leadership roles. I guess I thought this book would be more about universal lessons/practices that stand strong even today, and less about the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. I'm not a huge history buff, so I felt the content was a bit dry. However, there are many lessons in this book that would appeal to those who hold leadership roles or those hoping to gain followers of whatever it is they stand for. Because the book focused a lot on the type of man Abraham Lincoln was and why so many people supported and loved him, leaders today could take this book as advice or guidance in their own role as a leader and apply the practices they best see fit. Not knowing much at all about Abraham Lincoln, I felt Michael Winicott's writing was informative and helpful.
The narration of this piece, by Mike Norgaard, was good. Although there were a few spots where words/phrases were repeated (probably due to editing), it didn't take away from my overall listening experience. In my personal opinion, he added to my overall rating of the book because it read like a textbook. I would have much rather listened to him read it to me than me reading it in print. He kept a good pace, spoke clearly, and was easy to understand. If you are a student (or a teacher planning to have your students read this), I would recommend listening to the audiobook because it might keep you more engaged in the text.
Overall, I give this a rating of 4/5 stars, partly due to some editing errors throughout. The infomation was good, but maybe if it was longer or if there was more emphasis on the lessons that could be applied to one's life, rather than an informative script on who Abraham Lincoln was, I would have found it to be more engaging. Now, this does not mean you won't love it...it is just my personal opinion. I'm sure there are many will find this audiobook both informative and interesting.
Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. :-)
