Acerca de esta escucha
Abraham Lincoln, who began his career as an unsophisticated frontier lawyer, became the first successful presidential candidate of the fledgling Republican Party. As the nation splintered into a civil war, Lincoln wielded his constitutional authority with an inspired wisdom and effectiveness. Author of the Emancipation Proclamation; “Lincoln’s Code,” which established laws of war; and the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln transformed himself into one of the greatest leaders and statesmen in American history. He also greatly expanded presidential powers as he grappled with the exigencies of an unprecedented war among the states. Despite his death by an assassin’s bullet five days after the Confederates surrendered at Appomattox, Abraham Lincoln helped define the concept of democratic self-government—not just in the United States but around the world—perhaps more so than any American president.
