Acerca de esta escucha

Set against the backdrop of Karachi, Pakistan, Saadia Faruqi's tender and honest middle grade novel tells the story of two girls navigating a summer of change and family upheaval with kind hearts, big dreams, and all the right questions.

Mimi is not thrilled to be spending her summer in Karachi, Pakistan, with grandparents she’s never met. Secretly, she wishes to find her long-absent father, and plans to write to him in her beautiful new journal. The cook's daughter, Sakina, still hasn't told her parents that she'll be accepted to school only if she can improve her English test score - but then, how could her family possibly afford to lose the money she earns working with her Abba in a rich family's kitchen?

Although the girls seem totally incompatible at first, as the summer goes on, Sakina and Mimi realize that they have plenty in common - and that they each need the other to get what they want most.

This relatable and empathetic story about two friends coming to understand each other will resonate with listeners who loved Other Words for Home and Front Desk.

Beautiful bicultural story

9 year old and I loved it! “It was a great book and I really enjoyed listening to it “
Like that it was honest about the privilege of the American girl and power imbalance in their friendship , but didn’t emphasize it so much that they couldn’t build a friendship. Satisfying change in characters and relationships. Little plot twist, not too heavy for kids but serious enough to spark discussion. Thank you to the author!

Wonderful story

It is a lively and beautiful story and I appreciate how well the narrators skillfully brought the different characters to life.

Fine

The author did a good job portraying how obnoxious a sixth-grader can be, especially one with a mix of privilege and heartbreak on her shoulders. So I did not particularly enjoy spending time with the main character. But both narrators were strong, and the story was pleasant enough for what it was. I was expecting something bigger to happen with the election that forms the backdrop of the story.
