The novel has been adapted a number of times: initially for the stage in 1930; as a film in 1932, and 1957; and as a three-part television miniseries in 1966. The 1996 film In Love and War, depicts Hemingway's life in Italy as an ambulance driver in events prior to his writing A Farewell to Arms.

Heavy and grounded

This book rocked me. It’s hard to describe but Hemingway’s prose is sharp, like a cold splash of water. While the plot isn’t wildly complicated, there’s something very grounded about the story. It’s a small story really, but it carries profound emotional impact by the time you put the book down.

The plot is a mishmash of confused nonsense, but the narration is good.

Seriously, what is it about this book people love so much? Hemingway's Mary Sue has all the personality of one of his empty bottles of booze. The love story is painfully dysfunctional, and the book seems to profess some morality while absolutely lacking any basic decency. I don't think Hemingway meant for me to hate his characters, but I did. Absolute clowns the lot of them.
