Humanizing tale of inhuman acts

The depth of characters & backgrounds mixed with the steps and missteps of the adoptive and law enforcement systems bring this heartbreaking story to light. The Author invests in setting setting the reader with an understanding of "The times" That the crime occurred in to both show how such a systematic failure might happen, but also how timeless such an act of evil is.

I picked this book due to a personal and local connection. I was fascinated by the story. I also loved the way the author highlighted the legal and medical changes that changed with this case.

Very good book.

I read this book when it first came out. The story about little Dennis is horrendous. I have since read an re-read several times. It makes us become more vigilant when dealing with children. It is up to the adults in a child's life that should be watchful of problems that may be taking place. A child doesn't always know what is normal. I've cried for all children who are facing or have faced terrible fates at00 the hands of the people who are supposed to love them!

We never know our fate

I was adopted out of Ramsey County a year after Dennis. That was when Lois was wanting to adopt again. I am so thankful my life turned out to be a good one. I believe God played a role in my life for sure.

great book

Although I had to stop a few times to regain my composure, I didn't want to put this book down.

Really, really good book.

I could not stop listening, the author made me feel like I could "see" all of the characters involved. It was a sad and horrific event, but the author did an amazing job at presenting years & years of history.
I live in the area this horror took place, so I enjoyed hearing all of the local information.
If you like true crime and appreciate an author that goes deep into a subject, this book is for you.

Trigger warning

This book spares no detail in recounting horrific child abuse. As a mom I had to stop listening as the narrator never changes tone and delivers these details as matter of factly as mundane details and that is jarring. Also this author described the physical appearance of women in detail and with more implied judgement than was given to horrendously crimes but not of men and it was cringey. I listened to about 1/3 and had to bale. If you can dissociate and share the flat affect of the writer and narrator you may get to the end.

For anyone that said, it was “boring” in other reviews… You need to have a bit of patience because in order to understand the full scope of a story, you need to hear all aspects of it. Incredibly well done and thorough.
