Clarity for a caretaker

I absolutely felt this book was perfect in understanding what is going on as a caretaker. I loved the compassion it shows toward not only the patient, but the family who are taking care of their family members. It gives you a guide in the emotions, the stress, the love, and ability to be a caretaker. The author is truly someone who "gets it".

Very thorough book while also providing empathy

Gives a thorough, but straightforward, and easy-to- understand explanation of dementia, it's types, and it's causes. A good reference for resources you can use, as a caregiver, for what's available to help them, and what is available to help you as a caregiver. My friend's husband has been diagnosed with dementia, and this book has helped me to understand better what she is going through, and given me ideas of how I can support her as she cares for him.

Map of Hope

This "Guide" could not have dropped into my lap at a better time! I have been caring for my mom for the last couple of years. As I get older, the tasks seem to get harder. This book breaks everything down into easier-to-handle ideas, suggestions and gives hope. I also really appreciate the resources in here, they are extremely helpful. The author writes in a very flowy way. As I read and come up with questions, he automatically answers them in the next couple of sentences. I would completely recommend this book to caregivers.

Resources for Caregivers and their Loved Ones

Something I liked in the book was the theme of making sure your loved one has a sense of autonomy. The author gives examples of how to do so in a way that your loved one will understand and feel in control of their decisions.

The book also had sections about joining community groups so you as a caregiver have a support group and can find other helpful resources for your loved one.

I also loved chapter 10 where it encouraged celebrating achievements. One of the suggestions was: “Compile a memory book or collage filled with photos, mementos, and written anecdotes documenting memorable moments and your loved one's achievements.”

The passion for the topic

This book is a great guide for caregivers, obviously written by someone with experience through the ups and downs of being a caregiver themselves. I found it very helpful.

Informative read for caregivers

Well written and informative from a professional standpoint but still easy to understand. You can tell the author is passionate about this subject. I thought there were good suggestions (both general and specific) on how to adapt your lifestyle if you are caring for someone with dementia. There is also helpful advice for those who are being cared for as well, from legal and financial suggestions to safely setting up your loved ones home environment to give them more opportunities for success.

The personal stories throughout the book help illustrate these suggestions in an enjoyable way too, overall a very educational read.
