Acerca de esta escucha

In A Better Atonement, theologian Tony Jones debunks the traditional doctrine of Original Sin and shows how that doctrine has polluted our view of the atonement. In an intriguing interlude, Jones distances himself from other progressive theologians and biblical scholars by strongly defending the historical crucifixion and physical resurrection of Jesus. Jones then summarizes various understandings of the atonement, from the ancient church to today, ultimately proposing a view that both takes into account a realistic view of sin and maintains an robust belief in the Trinity. Thoughtful and reasoned. Summed up the major theories of the atonement concisely. Great primer on the topic.

Atonement theology overview

Decent intro and free(as it should be because it isn’t much). The author has some rational points but he is still thinking like a 4th century trinitarian instead of a 1st century messianic Jew.

I would understand if this was supposed to be a historical survey, but this book is supposed to be an argument. The fact that he barely cites the Bible is a disappointment. Moreover, modern psa has not argued that God’s wrath needs to be appeased, but rather legal demands set by God need to be satisfied. He sets aside the judicial nature of God throughout the Bible and claims towards the end that God is not bound by any thing, including judgment. This overlooks all of what God has to say about operating as a judge. This only touches the iceberg, but I highlight these to show that this work is far from solid. When I read authors, I look for biblical grounding. When Christianity becomes more than here-say and philosophy, it cannot stand as proper Christianity.
