Something to think about!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave me a new perspective of the prison system. I hope to see more writings from Dr. Gedney.

Distracted by Narration

Usually I love it when an author reads their own work, but not this time. Besides the rustling of papers and other background sounds (which REALLY detract from the story), the reader does not time her delivery so that it flows through a sentence. There are a lot of unnecessary pauses in most sentences that stop the natural flow and this is a overall distraction. I stopped listening to the book because I could not pay attention to the story anymore. Disappointed.

Great portrait of the intersections of career, marriage and mission

Dr Gedney does a fine job of showing how she developed mind and soul through the 30 years working in prison. She starts off (by her self description) as naive but as she develops as a doctor and project administrator she remarkably does not become jaded. Fantastic job.

Great Story. Poor narration.

Aside from the narrator's poor reading skills, lack of editing for sound (rustling papers. Starting at chapter 25, the sound becomes very sharp with a loud humming noise. It sounds like she's speaking into a tin can.) and mispronunciations - this story tells of a woman who has dedicated her life to helping others who, quite possibly, have been forgotten. Or thought of as non-persons. And in the face of adversity and her own safety. Bless her heart.

Must read

This book will soften your heart…if you let it. My hope is that everyone has at least 1 Dr. G in their lives.

Wild story! Story wise I was riveted, but I didn't care for the way she performed the voices of the prisoners; I thought that it was unauthentic. I also didn't care for the fact that I could hear the performer turn the pages.

I should have just read the book

The narrator stumbles over her own words. Pronounces words wrong. You can hear papers rustling, pages turning... I even heard someone in the background clear their throat. I am only on Chapter 6 and I am ready to give up on this book.

Important stories

This is an important perspective. Yes, the narration was at times painful. When she mispronounced a word, she didn’t stop and fix it and there were background noises that were frustrating. But the stories are worth it and she’s a good narrator, this just was obviously not professionally done. Kudos Dr. G. Most wouldn’t have survived or thrived like you. Many lives are the better for having you in them.
