During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

Wonderful listen

I liked that the author went into detail where the book needed to go into detail and left out detail where detail needed to be left out. This really put me in the story and helped me feel each character while moving things along to the next sequence. Excellent performance with each character.

Such an imagination for a book written in 1870. And such a lasting character this Nemo and his vessel.

Great detail in this classic adventure

It’s more of a travelogue than a true novel. There is not really a plot to the story, just a narrative of events that behind and ends, but it is lush and well told. Voice performance is excellent.

Great story

Definitely worth a listen if you enjoy the mid-19th century epic adventures like Moby Dick and Poe's Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. Contains many of the same or similar themes as these.
This novel is a bit more densely packed and fast paced then the other two mentioned.

A journey worthy of your time

lly published in 1870, French author, Jules Verne has become one of my all time favorite story tellers. The details in which he dove, could be at times almost suffocating. However, his thought provoking prose kept me hooked throughout the 20,000 leagues. I’m excited to learn more about this French talents life and works. I urge you to do the same!

Here because of the ride

Hi I didn’t read the book yet but I’m obsessed with submechanophobia and I love the sea serpent from the ride at Disney! He and his goofy cousin are ✨PRECIOUS✨ and I’m sad that he was most likely thrown in the trash or scrapped for parts... but he and his mermaid friends really said 🧜‍♀️🐉🧜‍♀️ also 🤘😝🤘 it’s junko

Really great story to listen to. Just fall into Nemo’s world under the sea and all the fine details of Verne’s writing sink in. Or not. Enjoy!

Amazing!

Having tried to read this classic twice as a child, I did not fully grasp it. Now, an adult, I decided to give it a try via audible and I’m so glad I did! What a piece of literary art!!

Jules Rules

Is Jules Verne one of the greatest storytellers of all time? I think so. This performance of his marine masterpiece is flawless. Beautifully voiced and deeply moving. Why hasn’t James Cameron made the movie?

Fantastic writing but not much of a story

The writer intricately describes a world under the sea. It kept my attention for the most part but the story was too simple and lacked resolution. It hints at moral dilemmas but never dives into them and you end the story having explored the whole world and yet understand very little more about the reasonings of the captain who escorts you. I could summarize the whole book in one or two sentences, which, in my opinion, you should not be able to do with a very good book.

Truly a great classic!

The performance was spot on. Classic story with a revitalized telling. Good casting. Five stars.
