George Orwells 1984 dreht sich um den Büroangestellten Winston Smith, der im Ministerium für Wahrheit Ozeaniens als kleines Zahnrad im Getriebe eines monströsen Staatsapparates Zensuraufgaben erledigt. Seit Jahren nagen Zweifel an der Legitimität des Systems, in dem ihm selbst ein Augenrollen das Leben kosten kann.
Der Roman beginnt mit dem ersten Schritt, diesen ursprünglich rein geistigen Widerstand in die Tat umzusetzen: Winston eröffnet ein Tagebuch.
In weiterer Folge lernt er eine junge Kollegin lieben, gemeinsam beginnen sie eine Liebesbeziehung, die in der jeden Lebensaspekt durchdringenden Diktatur für sich bereits einen Akt des Hochverrats darstellt.
Wenn sie auch unterschiedliche Ansichten über die Gesellschaft, in der sie leben, haben, sie eint die Ablehnung ihres engen Korsetts und der Wunsch nach individueller Freiheit und nicht zuletzt ein Recht, zu lieben und zu fühlen.
Während Winston versteht, WIE die Maschinerie der Tyrannei funktioniert, versteht er jedoch nicht, WESHALB der massive Aufwand ihres Überwachungs- und Unterdrückungsapparates betrieben wird.
Als sie sich entschließen, Kontakt zur Opposition im Untergrund zu suchen und schließlich in die Hände der Staatsmacht gelangen, lernt Winston den wahren Hintergrund der Gesellschaft Ozeaniens kennen.
Bis zu seinem Tode war George Orwell überzeugter Sozialist - umso größer war die Wirkung, die sein 1949 veröffentlichtes Werk auf die politische Linke der damaligen Zeit hatte. Innerhalb dieser galt die Sowjetunion als die Verwirklichung der Ideen Marx, das Arbeiterparadies, dass die versklavten Massen aus ihrem Joch befreien würde.
Orwell war einer der wenigen Linken seiner Zeit, die es wagten, an diesem Narrativ zu rütteln. Unter dem Eindruck des unbestreitbaren Terrors der stalinistischen Herrschaft und ihrer zynischen, opportunistischen Kooperation mit dem faschistischen und kapitalistischen Ausland, kritisierte er die Heuchelei und die Unmenschlichkeiten des real existierenden Kommunismus mit Farm der Tiere und 1984.
