Acerca de esta escucha

1 Dead in Attic is a collection of stories by Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose, recounting the first harrowing year and a half of life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Celebrated as a local treasure and heaped with national praise, Rose provides a roller-coaster ride of observation, commentary, emotion, tragedy, and even humor - in a way that only he could find in a devastated wasteland.

They are stories of the dead and the living, stories of survivors and believers, stories of hope and despair. And stories about refrigerators.

1 Dead in Attic freeze-frames New Orleans, caught between an old era and a new, during its most desperate time, as it struggles out of the floodwaters and wills itself back to life.

insightful

a great book for anyone who got all of their Katrina news from watching television. This will set you straight on the facts from the viewpoints of those who lived it.

Profound and Moving.

Extremely moving account of the year following hurricane Katrina and Chris Rose’s columns in the Times Picayune. Very well done, very sad, very moving, and so many wonderful characters. Highly recommend. Audible, do better. There were so many mispronunciations of important New Orleans Streets (too many to count!!) if I heard Tchoupitoulas mispronounced one more time I thought I was going to scream. New Orleans pronounces things differently. So please, do your research and find out that streets that sound like the city of Milan in Italy are actually pronounced Mylan. Or Prytania, Esplanade, Metairie, I could go on and on, so many mispronunciations. The reader was absolutely fantastic. It wasn’t his fault. But if you’re gonna have someone narrate a book about New Orleans, why don’t you find a local who knows how to pronounce things correctly.

One of my favorite audible books ever

This book is both irreverently funny and heartrendingly sad. The author mixes both cockeyed wit and pathos together to form an honest, recognizable depiction of life after Katrina for those who lived it and those who died in it, and most of all, for those who love New Orleans.

There is even a section on dealing with depression and PTSD.

Bronson Pinchot brings just the right note of weariness, sadness and non-apology to the reading.

Everyone should listen.

Staggering chronicle

One of the most powerful things I’ve read or heard. It’s must for anyone who has had to start over, start anything or survive anything. Rose’s writing is eloquent yet unvarnished. Pinchot’s reading is in remarkable sync with the stories—he sounds like Rose himself, feeling every word. It will stay with you.

Wonderful…except the pronunciations

This is a beautiful collection of stories from my beloved New Orleans at her toughest hour. The performance was incredible…other than a few mispronunciations that all us Who Dats would recognize instantly. Unfortunately, they were often enough, and jarring enough, to pull me out of the story. Otherwise, this was an excellent listen that I recommend wholeheartedly.

Fascinating, Sad, Happy, Very Funny, Emotional!

I absolutely loved this listen! It was so easy to listen to, and it grabbed me from the start and did not let go until the very end. Chris poured his heart out in an effort to tell us what Katrina did to his beloved city and to him, personally. The chapters are very short, taken from newspaper articles he wrote over the course of a year or so after Katrina hit. As the book proceeds, you can feel him sinking into depression--and you know immediately as his mood improves or dives. There were parts where I could actually feel the sadness and hopelessness, Then his mood would lift and he was laugh-out-loud funny (the Chocolate City!)

Chris got very personal and I applaud his sharing his deepest sadness and despair with us. I am sure he helped many folks realize that asking for help and taking medication can be a true life saver.

Come take this trip with Chris Rose. It is like no other book I have listened to. Bronson Pinchot's narration was fabulous. He is worth searching out for other listens, he is THAT good. It didn't bother me a bit that he might have mispronounced street names or that his NO accent was not spot on. He brought so much else to the character of Chris.

This is a great listen and I highly recommend it.

(I truly wish Chris Rose was busy writing about the current world situation. something much bigger than New Orleans, devastation on a much higher level. I know he could do it but what a challenge!!)

Narration

Love this book - just wish Chris Rose had narrated the book himself with his distinctive accent. Then is would have sounded like real New Orleans .

Issues with narration

I listen to audiobooks often and am surprised that apparently no one edits the books for pronunciation. The frequent mispronunciation of place names in this narration are distracting and irritating. It only takes seconds to Google the proper pronunciation.
