ベオウルフ物語は、古くからイギリスに伝わる伝説が一篇の叙事詩となったもので、英文学史上にある伝説の中でも特に有名なものです。
英雄ベオウルフが、巨人やドラゴンなどと戦う冒険談は、『指輪物語』などの後のファンタジー作品にも大きな影響を与えたと言われています。
物語がいつ作られたかは、5世紀頃とも、8世紀か9世紀頃とも言われ諸説あり、はっきりしていませんが、アングロサクソン語（古英語）の最古の詩篇として、言語学上も珍重されています。
物語は若き英雄ベオウルフが隣国の窮地を救う為に海を渡って駆けつけ、巨人グレンデルと戦うお話と、王となり年老いたベオウルフがドラゴンに戦いを挑む話と大きく2つにわかれており、常に人々の為に戦うベオウルフの勇敢さと正義感は、物語を聴く人の心をも熱くさせるでしょう。
今も輝きの衰えない、波瀾万丈の英雄物語をお楽しみください。
