私が最初に怪談に筆をつけたのは、大正七年であった。それは『魚の妖・蟲の怪』と云う、中央公論に載せたもので、『岩魚の怪』と『蠅供養』の二つからなっていた。
ところで、幸か不幸か、其の怪談の評判がよかったので、彼方此方から怪談を頼まれるようになって、長い間怪談ばかり書いた。それは私が支那の怪談が好きで、晉唐小説六十種、剪燈新話、聊齋志異などと云うような物を手あたりしだいに読んでいた関係から、怪談に特殊な興味を覚えていたことも原因しているのであろう……
田中貢太郎は「日本怪談全集」の序文でこう語っています。怪談にこだわり続けた田中が、二十年にわたって日本の怪談を集めたものがこの全四巻の日本怪談全集です。暑い夏にはぴったりの背筋の凍るようなお話の数々は、今なお人々の心を掴んで話しません。

田中貢太郎は日本の作家。高知県出身。号は桃葉。『田岡嶺雲・幸徳秋水・奥宮健之追懐録』が出世作となる。「中央公論」の「説苑(ぜいえん)」欄に実録,情話,怪異譚を書き、井伏鱒二・尾崎士郎らと随筆誌『博浪抄』を創刊。著作は伝記物、紀行文、随想集、情話物、怪談・奇談など多岐に渡る。代表作『旋風時代』では明治維新の顕官の情痴の生活を奔放に描いて独自の境地を開いた。1940年菊池寛賞受賞。『怪談青灯集』など怪談物も書き,『聊斎志異 (りょうさいしい) 』の翻訳もある。(c)2017 Pan Rolling
