6年後のある夏の夕方のことです。
哲学者である私は、となり町で、かつて同級生であったオギルギー博士とばったり出くわしました。
かれはとてもこうふんした様子で「ちょっとうちの天文台で望遠鏡をのぞいていかないか？アレを見たらきもをつぶすぞ。」と言いました。
私は案内されるがまま天文台へ行き、天体望遠鏡をのぞきました。そして、ある星の表面の一部分が真っ赤にもえているのを見ておどろきました。
オギルギー博士は火星の生物が地球に戦いをいどんでいるのだと説明します。
ある夜のこと。空の一角が急にくもり、とつぜん、シュルシュルシューという、けたたましい音が鳴りひびきました。その音は、だんだん大きくなり、やがて丸い物体がすごいいきおいで落下してくるのが見えました。
丸い物体は砂地に大きな穴をあけ、オーゼル荒野に落下しました。
やがて落下物のフタが急にはげしく回り、地面に落ちました。そして中から、大きくて丸い灰色のかたまりが、ノロノロとはい出してきたのです。にぶい光を放つ2つの目のあいだには、うねうねとした灰色の触手が何本も生えており、とぐろをまきながらベッタリと円筒のふちにねばりついていました。
かいぶつは円筒のふちにつかまったまま、ジッとこちらをにらみます。目の下には口らしいものもありますが、くちびるはなく、ピクピクとふるえてよだれをたらしていました。
