في هذا الكتاب اتجاه نحو دراسة قصائد نزار دراسة تحليلية مفصلة تهدف إلى البحث عن مناهج هذا الشاعر في تنفيذ رؤياه الشعرية، وبناء التفاصيل داخل كتلة العمل الفني. عن قصائد نزار لا بد أن يبدأ بالحديث عن المرأة، التي ارتبط بها شعر نزار، وفي هذا الحديث يؤكد "الصادق النيهوم" أن نزار قباني ليس شاعر المرأة واللقب التي أعطى له (شاعر المرأة)، إنما هو حافل بسوء الفهم، والنقاد لقبوه بذلك لأنهم لم يجدوا مكاناً أكثر وضوحاً في قائمتهم الجاهزة سوى باب المرأة.
وعند تناوله لموقف نزار من الحلم الشعري ذي الأبعاد غير المحددة الذي يدعي (المرأة)، يرى الصادق النيهوم أن نزار أثبت بوضوح صاعق أن حاجته إلى الالتزام أحياناً تبدو حاجة جوهرية بالنسبة لبقائه ذاته، وأن المرأة في شعره مخلوق غير حقيقي بالنسبة لواقع المرأة في العالم. وفي تحليله لقصيدة "الحب والبترول" يؤكد الصادق النيهوم على أن هناك فرق حقيقي بين مخلوقات نزار الدخانية في هذه القصيدة وبين شخصياته الأخرى المحددة الأبعاد والعمق.
فالمرأة "في الحب والبترول" حسب تعبيره قضية عادلة ذات ثلاثة أبعاد: البعد الأول: يتمثل في محاولة الشراء التي يقوم بها الرجل الغني واصفاً المرأة في كفه ونقوده في كفه أخرى. البعد الثاني: يتمثل في مقايضة الحب بالنقود، ذلك الخطأ الذي ارتكبه الرجل الغني مغمض العينين، عبر عجزه المطلق عن التفرقة بين الحب والجنس. البعد الثالث: يتمثل في قضية سياسية معروفة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، وهي النزاع القائم حول أرض فلسطين، ونزار يعرض هذه النقطة بوضوح يشبه العمل فوق السطح ويتورط مرة أخرى في مهزلة الخطابة المباشرة: تمرغ يا أمير النفط.. فوق وحول لذاتك كممسحة.. تمرغ في ضلالاتك لك البترول، فاعصره.. على قدمي عشيقاتك. كهدف الليل في باريس، فالمرأة هنا مخلوق عامل في دائرة حافلة بالقضايا تمتلك حاجتها من الأهداف والخطط وتتحرك داخل دائرة الضوء محملة بالحوار والمنطق ومشاعر الغضب والازدراء.
