Сюжет пьесы Н.В. Гоголю подсказал А.С. Пушкин. Он рассказал ему о некоем Павле Свиньине, который, приехав в Бесарабию, выдавал себя за важного петербургского чиновника. И был разоблачен лишь после того, как начал брать у арестантов прошения. Также Пушкин вспомнил, как собирая материалы по истории пугачевского восстания, он был принят одним из губернаторов за тайного ревизора, присланного инспектировать губернскую администрацию.
Эти две истории и легли в дальнейшем в основу сюжета "Ревизора". Премьера комедии состоялась в 1836 году и имела колоссальный успех у зрителей. Критика не была столь единодушной. В некоторых изданиях были опубликованы разгромные критические статьи, обвиняющие пьесу в неправдоподобности, поверхностности и пр. Прошло более 170 лет, но комедия о чиновничьем беспределе, взяточничестве и казнокрадстве, сохраняет свою актуальность и в наши дни, заставляя еще раз задуматься о причинах негативных проявлений в жизни современной России.
