В замысел молодого прозаика (а в год создания Детства юнкеру Толстому исполнилось двадцать четыре) входило еще одно произведение - Молодость, но эту повесть он так и не написал... В своей трилогии автор дотошно исследует внутренний мир юного человека - сначала ребенка, затем подростка, потом юноши. Писатель пытается понять законы, по каким формируется сознание.
В созданных им образах обнажается внутренняя жизнь человека - сложный, противоречивый процесс, обычно скрытый от посторонних глаз. Повести автобиографичны: в истории Николеньки Иртеньева автор переживает и анализирует свою жизнь, ища ответы на главные для каждого из нас вопросы: каким надо стать? к чему стремиться?
