I typically don’t read romance novels, and now I remember why. The character development was lacking, but the lust was not. However, their relationship seemed superficial at best; one wonders what happens once the shine is off. But, unmoved by any characters, I won’t wonder.

This story grew on me. At first, I found the unending Oxford accent overdone and let it get in the way of staying with the story. But, I hung in there, sensing something worthwhile afoot. The wait was worth it as a very unique whodunit got untracked and roared to a satisfying finish.

This charming, humorous, and very human story feels like getting a hug from a book. It is helping to comfort me as a teacher going to and from from another days of stress over Covid at school. Please keep the "book hugs" coming!

This whodunit played out on a global stage, had me rooted to the story from cover to cover. It was at its essence a classic thriller, but with the insider experience of the workings of government and diplomacy from our former Secretary of State. Still, with the modern peril of terrorism in our daily lives, it felt real and foreboding. I most enjoyed, though, the personal relationship between Ellen, the story's Secretary of State, and Betsy, her lifelong friend. And, finally, here was a suspense story in which a female protagonist solved the puzzle and also, didn't need a gun to do it! The challenge in this book was in keeping track of multiple locations and a near constant addition of characters as the narrative shifted point of view from one chapter to the next. As captivated as I felt by this story, the length (45 chapters) asked for a lot of commitment from readers.

An interesting double mystery, but with a cast of unsympathetic characters. The book is easily 10 chapters too long.

I finished it only because my women's book group was discussing it at my house. It wasn't our first, second, third, or any choice really. Our discussion leader was born In Oklahoma, where the book is mostly set, and that was why we were reading it. The down and out heroine was its only appeal because she was a sympathetic character.

Overblown story with some fine moments. This tome cried for a disciplined and tough editor. The author's theme was lost at times in the 55 mindblowing chapters. This was more of a reader's ultramarathon.
