Historia
In the quiet of twilight, on an early autumn day, 26-year-old Elisa Vandersteel is killed while riding her bicycle along the Charles River. It appears she was struck by lightning - except the weather is perfectly clear, with not a cloud in sight. Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the Cambridge Forensic Center's director and chief, decides at the scene that this is no accidental act of God. Her investigation becomes complicated when she begins receiving a flurry of bizarre poems from an anonymous cyberbully who calls himself Tailend Charlie.

I have always really enjoyed Patricia Cornell's novels, and this one was no exception!
Susan Ericksen's narration efforts were commendable. Her transitions from one character to the next were accomplished seamlessly.
Excellent job, ladies!

Another wonderful book by Gemma Liviero!
Revisado: 03-06-22
I just finished this story, and to say that it was "great" is an understatement. Gemma Liviero has a true way with words. She not only tells stories that one doesn't forget, but also wends her way into the reader's heart and soul and mind. Sometimes a sentence will stick out as being so very astute that I must put the Audible version on hold and just digest said sentence. Awesomely amazing!
Narration was really very excellently accomplished! I enjoyed the calm tone of Willum's thoughts and conversations, and Emi!y Foster's wonderful diction and expressiveness were superb.
All in all, a wonderful story and listening experience.

Historia
1915. In German-occupied Belgium, a tragic loss forces Josephine Descharmes to navigate dangerous new territory. By day it’s compliance, serving German officers at the Hotel Métropole. By night it’s resistance, working with her brothers underground to help Allied soldiers and civilians cross the border into Holland. Both paths put her and her family at great risk. As Josephine struggles to keep her family safe, Arthur, a grief-stricken English soldier trapped behind enemy lines, finds purpose and hope with Josephine and her work.

A beautiful story!
Revisado: 03-02-22
This is the first story I have ever read from the era of WW1. I initially felt like I was too involved with WW2 and the Holocaust (I have immersed myself with this time frame for the past year), and wondered if going back a few years might perhaps have a soothing or hea!ing effect on my wok red and saddened heart. I had seen reviews on Gemma Liviero, very positive ones, so chose this book to read.
I was not disappointed!
The author indeed has a way of making the reader feel like they are part of the story. Although I have read thousands of books over the years, only a few authors have ever made me feel this way, and I can only give praise to this group of writers, which now includes Ms. Liviero. Thanks so much, dear lady. Your storytelling skills are superb!
The narration was also excellent! Both narrators had excellent skills, and kept my interest in both Arthur's tale and Josephine's story piqued constantly!
I feel like my favorite parts were: Josephine, when she finally feels love for Arthur and can finally realize that she has true !ove; and in Arthur's story when he speaks to Xavier about his son, Jack, and feels li!e the heavy weight and burden of pain and remorse has finally been lifted from him!
Thank you Ms.Liviero, for this wonderful book! Before this review, I purchased another of your books, but this one is about World War 2, and I am sure it will also be as good as this book was. I will begin reading it tonight....but, a nice cup of tea first!

Historia
Therese Wolley is a mother who has made a promise. She works as a secretary, shops for groceries on Saturdays, and takes care of her two girls. She doesn’t dwell on the fact that her girls are fatherless, mostly because her own father abandoned her before she was born and she has done just fine without him. Even though her older daughter regularly wakes with nightmares and her younger one whispers letters under her breath, she doesn't shift from her resolve that everything will be fine.

"Left" was so right!!!
Revisado: 02-18-22
Thank you, Tamar Ossowski, for one of the best and most memorable books I have ever heard on Audible! It combined such a realistic and yet heartfelt story, and was just "spot on" in its depiction of Frannie's autism. I enjoyed the story line so much! Although the whole story was a bit convoluted, I personally enjoyed that aspect of it, and when the last few chapters explained how Leah and Frannie were related, what Barbara was responsible for, and how Tim comes back into the story, I felt like all had a possibility of redemption.
One personal note: I felt like Tresa did the right thing leaving Tim and taking Matilda away. Tim had been way too quick to side with his Mother, and after years of that sort of sad life, I would have done the same. So Tim got what he deserved. He should have spent those hours he sublimated his rage at life into and talked to his loving wife instead.
The narration was excellent. I really liked the different voices, rather than one narrator trying to make different voices!
Tamar, you have made a new fan! Thank you for such a great book!

Historia
The woman’s body was found in the early morning, on a bench in a New York City playground. She was clean, her hair neatly arranged, her makeup carefully applied. But other things were very wrong—like the tattoo and piercings, clearly new. The clothes, decades out of date. The fatal wound hidden beneath a ribbon around her neck. And the note: Bad Mommy, written in crayon as if by a child.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Great read!
Revisado: 10-07-21
This book just grabbed me, from Patty's attempts to run away, on. It is so very well written! It moved right along, making me feel like an actual observer to everything going on.
Once I got used to the narrator's voice, I enjoyed her reading it. I didn't care too much for it at the start... a little flat, not much inflection... just a tiny bit too fast... however, after a couple of chapters, I had decided that the voice was acceptable and actually feel like I should complement this narrator on her excellent diction and correct pronunciation. Great job, all told.
The only part I struggled with was the part where Ms. Chambers is beginning her work on the code. I abhor repetition, and hearing those number sequences repeated made me a bit upset. Other than that one area, I found this to be a smooth and compelling read!

Hanna Slivka is on the cusp of 14 when Hitler's army crosses the border into Soviet-occupied Ukraine. Soon, the Gestapo closes in, determined to make the shtetele she lives in "free of Jews". Until the German occupation, Hanna spent her time exploring Kwasova with her younger siblings, admiring the drawings of the handsome Leon Stadnick, and helping her neighbor dye decorative eggs. But now she, Leon, and their families are forced to flee and hide in the forest outside their shtetele—and then in the dark caves beneath the rolling meadows, rumored to harbor evil spirits.

Such a wonderful, honorable story!
Revisado: 10-06-21
I am still seated here in my warm, safe home, having just finished listening to Audible's 'My Real Name is Hanna', a superbly written story by Tara Lynn Masih.
I would like, at this time, to comp!ement the narrator, Suzanne Toren, for her excellent narration of the book. Her voice is perfectly pitched, and her diction is excellent. Although I love Audible, I do not always enjoy the narrator. I hope Ms. Toren will be in the recording studio in the future also. I found myself looking forward to hearing her voice as well as what path the story was going to take next! Audible, I hope you will keep this dear woman around!
I find I am still mesmerized by the actual thought of such a large family living in that group of caves, in the dark and in such conditions... I would often find myself wondering if I would have survived. Also, the deprivation from lack of proper nutrition is just utterly amazing to me. I was a nurse for 32+ years, and have seen starvation both in Ethiopia in the 1970's, plus more recently in the U.S. as well, especially among the many homeless people. I have had many times when I went to bed hungry in the 1950's as a little girl, and again as a mother to three sons who were 12, 6 and 3, and thus always hungry. Yet I doubt either of those periods in my life were even remotely alike to the hunger felt by the families in this. book or even more so felt by those in the concentration camps and the gulags after the camps were finally set free.
I am an avid reader and also a writer, and I cannot find the words to express the skill which Ms. Masih used to write this story... it seems at times she is weaving a web of lovely images yet at other times she is flatly describing the actual events, especially during the caves chapters. Both styles serve their purposes and actual story lines excellently. This author is truly a wordsmith!
One more thought: as they sag, those who do not learn from History ARE doomed to repeat it... I can only hope and yes, pray, that the citizens of the World will soon stop thinking of themselves first plus will be awakened from this dark reality of racism that seems to be in the very air we humans breathe! I can attest to the fact that so many Jewish folks and Gypsies and other Europeans were slaughtered in concentration camps! I have stood in the gas chambers of several camps when I was a young teenaged girl in the mid-60's. I have honestly felt the horror, fear and despair while standing in those various gas chambers, as if being there in such a place allowed me to channel and actually be aware of and feel the hundreds of thousands of spirits who met their deaths in such a horrifying place and such a terrifying and INHUMANE way. I believe to this day that I was meant to feel those emotions, as I was 13 years old and had not yet been taught about the Holocaust. Go figure, as I hear my sons and grandchildren say at times.

Historia
Nora Brown teaches high school English and lives a quiet life in Seattle with her husband and six-year-old daughter. But one November day, moments after dismissing her class, a girl’s face appears above the students’ desks—“a wild numinous face with startling blue eyes, a face floating on top of shapeless drapes of purples and blues where arms and legs should have been. Terror rushes through Nora’s body—the kind of raw terror you feel when there’s no way out, when every cell in your body, your entire body, is on fire—when you think you might die.”

An excellently cathartic story.
Revisado: 07-12-21
The narration done by Cassandra Campbell was amazingly realistic, and of a far better quality than many of the books I have listened to from Audible. Thank you so very much, Cassandra.
The most memorable part of the entire book comes at the ending, all of Chapter 31. I sat just frozen in fear that Nora would drown herself. I do know how hard it is to decide this question: carry on with your life, or end it once and for all... relieve yourself of the burden and of the horror. And then, Margaret again saves Nora, and allows for Nora to begin accepting her and truly begin healing! The ending was just beyond exceptional. Thank you, Anna Quinn!
I feel that Anna Quinn is just such a lovely and excellent author.
I always read a few reviews of every book I am considering to purchase from Audible or from my Kindle. I was hesitant to purchase this book due to some of the reviews... several were so critical of the abuse scenes, and the subject material in general... I do feel that perhaps the book should have included a warning of some sort, as it was graphic in a small way. To me, not graphic. I am a survivor of incestual child abuse, from age 3 until mid-teens. I appreciated the way Ms. Quinn handled the abuse scenes, not too vague yet not soft porn. She was just descriptive enough to allow the reader to understand the viewpoint through Margaret's eyes. Anyone who feels that her writing revealed too much is either an abuse victim who has not yet come to terms with their childhood abuse, or a person who has no empathy with a child who has been victimized by an adult especially where actual incest was involved.
Ms. Quinn's expertise with showing us the terrible effects, especially when they accompany us into our adult life, is beyond belief. Thank you, Anna Quinn.
I found myself sort of tiptoeing my way into the book as it moved along. I never once wanted to not finish reading, yet as a scene would impact my own past abuse I did feel that nauseous, grinding, and nervous feeling I always experienced before receiving enough therapy to at get through my adult years.
I am in the actual process of setting up therapy once again to try to cope with what happened to me as a very sweet, innocent and totally victimized little girl. My abuser was abused sexually by his brothers and male cousins when he was very young,; however, still no valid reason to abuse your own little, innocent daughter. I want to be horribly, honestly blunt here: I am 69 years old now, and only felt relief and finally free of fear when my Dad died 9 years ago. He ended his abusive behaviors when I finally stood up to him at age 16 and threatened (with enough anger and strength that he took me seriously) to call the police on him and that he could NEVER EVER touch me again. In all the years that followed, I was never once comfortable in his presence, and the stomach grinding and intense fear continued until the phone call stating he had just passed on. The intense feeling of freedom was just incredible. I still carry a feeling of sadness about what happened, and feel that perhaps one more round of therapy could help. I don't wish to carry the sadness, from a 3 year old for the next 13 years of her imprisoned life, forward into my last stage of life.
Thank you so very much, Anna Quinn, for your touching story and for reminding me that it was NOT my fault nor my actions that caused my abuse, and that there is always time and a positive way to handle the little shreds of memory that still impact upon my life.
I absolutely loved Margaret, and she and my own little 4 year old entity (Gurney Gum Drops) are such brave and tough little saviors. The story's ending was beyond exceptional, Ms. Quinn, and all I can say is Thank You from the bottom of my scarred little heart for having Nora give and yes, receive, the pure love and total acceptance that Margaret gave and finally received.
Bless you and love you! Please keep on writing!

A wonderful, enlightened book!
Revisado: 03-06-21
This is the first book by Ms.Hawker that I have read; however, most definitely NOT the last!
I enjoyed the story line and was surprised AND pleased to hear during the author's narrative at the end that it was so closely based upon a true story! Also, her clarification of the youngest child, who set my mind at ease about the relationship between Anton and Elisabeth. What a lucky young girl, to have these two brave and enlightened persons as parents!
Ms. Hawker's explanation of why this book was written and especially in light of the 2016 Presidential election, literally gave me shivers. She is 100% correct in her evaluation of the situation brimming with evil in our country, and I agree with her assessment completely. When a nation does not learn the lessons history provides, they are doomed to repeat the follies of the past.
Thank you again for such a lovely book!
