Historia
William Stoner is born at the end of the 19th century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar's life, far different from the hardscrabble existence he has known. And yet as the years pass, Stoner encounters a succession of disappointments.

A Small Masterpiece
Revisado: 07-27-21
The book is a small masterpiece. It was published at a time when the literary world was most interested in the likes of Cheever and Updike and Styron. And simply put, critics made a profound mistake by missing this lyrical song of existentialism and stoicism by John Williams.
It is not an easy read (or listen) for all. It’s a deeply serious story with very little humor to lighten one’s load along the journey. The storyline is straightforward and uncomplicated. But it is the inner dialogue of the characters, particularly that of the lead William Stoner, that gives the novel its earnestness. Indeed, there is surprisingly little detailed description of a character’s surroundings. Some but not near as much as one might expect in a story that invites such high praise from a variety of sources.
I highly recommend this book — in written or audio form.

Historia
Kierkegaard wasn't really a philosopher in the academic sense. Yet he produced what many people expect of philosophy. His subject was the individual and his or her existence, the "existing being." In Kierkegaard's view, this purely subjective entity lay beyond the reach of reason, logic, philosophical systems, theology, or even "the pretenses of psychology." Nonetheless, it was the source of all these subjects. The branch of philosophy to which Kierkegaard gave birth has come to be known as existentialism.

A Good Introduction
Revisado: 07-14-21
The advanced reader who is returning to a brief summary of Kierkegaard as a refresher might be somewhat disappointed that the text doesn’t dive a bit deeper into certain aspects of the philosopher’s work. However, as introduction for the general reader to one of the giants of philosophy, this book won’t be equaled by many summaries on the market. I highly recommend the book in either text or audio format.
