Historia
Surveillance State tells the gripping, startling, and detailed story of how China’s Communist Party is building a new kind of political control: shaping the will of the people through the sophisticated harnessing of data. It is a story born in Silicon Valley and America’s “War on Terror,” and now playing out in alarming ways on China’s remote Central Asian frontier. As a minority separatist movement strains against Party control, China’s leaders have built a dystopian police state that keeps millions under the constant gaze of security forces armed with AI.

What an audio book should be about - also great to hear a narrator who can pronounce Chinese!

Marred by the author’s editorializing
Revisado: 12-20-22
Sadly this book was marred by the author’s editorializing, including his incorporation of himself into the text. I was also dismayed by his poor understanding of patents.

Historia
In the darkest days of the American Revolution, Francis Marion and his band of militia freedom fighters kept hope alive for the patriot cause during the critical British southern campaign. Like the Robin Hood of legend, Marion and his men attacked from secret hideaways before melting back into the forest or swamp. Employing insurgent tactics that became commonplace in later centuries, Marion and his brigade inflicted losses on the enemy that were individually small but cumulatively a large drain on British resources and morale.

A Useful Book About Someone Who Is Not Well Remembered Outside of SC
Revisado: 08-21-22
A useful book, although I found the focus on battles to be a bit overwhelming, and I think the author may be too generous in his treatment of Marion’s relationship with slaves. If you travel down or through South Carolina this book will introduce you to much of the revolutionary war landscape. Still I would have hoped the author brought that landscape more alive: were there alligators in the swamps? What monuments meant remain to Marion? How fast could an army travel around the tough landscape of the low country? How did Marion recognize or not recognize his African American troops? How does his rag rag militia figure into the 2nd Amendment provision about a “well-ordered militia”? The book is well narrated and well organized with each chapter covering district events in Marion’s life.

Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Revisado: 08-15-20
A great listen on a cross-country trip. The book illuminated so much of the lanscape on I70, Fremont culture, complex hunter gatherer, Cahokia, Mississippian, Hopewell, Algonquin, Iriquois, Adeena, and others. I enjoyed listening to parts a second time to refresh my memory and we passed various landmarks.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

Worth Reading to Understand the China Hawk's Persp
Revisado: 07-26-19
Although I don't agree with Pillsbury's perspective of one motivation dominating the PRC to replace the US as a goal hegemon, he does Marshall up many telling facts and anecdotes which at a minimum reveal the nativity of our past engagements. Why, I ask, have we not been able to strike a balance. The narrator is good, but his pronunciation of Chinese leaves something to be desired and leaves me to wonder how much Chinese Pillsbury really understood.
