Historia
It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

Incredible writing
Revisado: 01-16-24
The writing is incredible. Some of the best I have encountered. The depth of each of the characters captivating. And the performances are perfect. I will be recommending this to anyone who sits still long enough.

This is Irving Stone's powerful and passionate biographical novel of Michelangelo. His time: the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring popes, the all-powerful Medici family, the fanatic monk Savonarola. His loves: the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de Medici; the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi; and his last love - his greatest love - the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna.

The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Learned notes from the author offer rich cultural context. This volume is a doorway into a captivating world.

Julia Whelan is a Wonder
Revisado: 08-16-22
Whether writing or voicing. A line from the TV movie “Sybil”
comes to mind. It's like Julia is stuffed with people. This is an excellent story about inside Audio. Told with heart. And as Julia says in the author’s note, audiobooks have taken off. Busy with my elderly father and keeping my infant grandaughters, I have downloaded over 800 books the past five years. Finishing most, but bad narrating has caused me to abandon some. Julia pushes the bar way up so my standards are sky high. I am off to find a new listen, hoping to find one that is not a comedown!

The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

Will Take Your Breath Away
Revisado: 07-08-21
Hard to describe the many emotions that have been stirred. Ultimately this is a story of virtue. Reading this amid the political strife we are experiencing I find myself disappointed in the lot of us. We are creating this strife because we all think if we yell at each other loud enough, accuse one another of the worst intentions then more people will be rallied to our side. I am not minimizing the pain, suffering, or loss that many have experienced. I am not dismissing the racism or other forms of hardship we inflict on one another or permit in our society. But our problems and our differences can be resolved either legally or by mustering a little heartfelt empathy. Mark Sullivan has delivered a story based on the fact that shows us what true hate and evil look and feel like. His characters based, on actual people, were cruel enough not only to inflict unspeakable horrors on others but force other people to participate in their wickedness to control them. This is the story of good people caught in an ever-tightening vice by two of the evilest regimes our world has ever known, the Soviets and the Nazis. Read this book and thank God this is America and reconcile our differences with civility, reason, and a little understanding. Thank you Mark Sullivan for this important book. The Audible version is spellbinding and does right by your book.

By day, 17-year-old Jo Kuan works as a lady's maid for the cruel daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Atlanta. But by night, Jo moonlights as the pseudonymous author of a newspaper advice column for the genteel Southern lady, "Dear Miss Sweetie". When her column becomes wildly popular, she uses the power of the pen to address some of society's ills, but she's not prepared for the backlash that follows when her column challenges fixed ideas about race and gender.

Overflowing With Things to Ponder
Revisado: 05-05-21
Truly a wonderful story. Narration perfect but I am ordering a print copy so I can go back through and highlight and steal the most wonderful literary devices I have ever heard. A unique story (for me) not because it's set in the South but from the perspective of a Chinese American girl at the end of the 19th century. The cast of characters is diverse and Jo struggles with racism, sexism, and painful rejection but joy perseveres. Going to have to check out what I have been missing from Stacey Lee.
