Finlay Donovan is killing it...except, she’s really not. The new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head.

Revisado: 07-15-21
Fun story with likeable characters and fantastic narration. Engaging plot. I ended up listening until 4:30 a.m. because I couldn't put it down! Will look for more from this author.
Language note to self: when did swear become a noun? Doesn't it have to be a verb or adjective? e.g "I swear that..." or "I uttered a swear word." Is "I said a swear" a new or regional use?

Historia
People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

Fun story- but jarring musical breaks are painful
Revisado: 09-01-19
This was a really fun story, reminding me of Jim Butcher's tongue in cheek approach to the supernatural in his Dresden Files books. Quirky characters. Big dogs. Evil shadows. However, every once in a while HORRIBLE music would erupt at the transitions between chapters. Loud, jarring music that struck agony to my 'in recovery from a brain injury' head, and was at complete odds to the narrator's voice.
I would like to buy other books in this series, but I am investigating whether they also have this miserable music in them first. It ruined my experience with the book and hurt my head too much to risk again. I'm at a loss trying to figure out why it was there, as there is no style consistency and it did not add anything to the production It was louder than the narration, which was also uncomfortable.
Fun story- but horrible, pointless music detracts from the audio version.

Great narrator.
Revisado: 05-18-19
Slow to get going, had some good tension in the middle. I thought the ending was silly, & linked to contrived motivation from the mysterious antagonist(s). The narrator, however, was fantastic. She kept me listening.

not as good as first 3 books.
Revisado: 10-06-18
the book seemed disconnected with the mix between Marcus and Phoebe story and continuing Diana and Matthew story - too much switching from past to present - way too much flashback. The narrator is whispery and fast and does very poor accents: painful to listen to at times.

Reader needed a Finnish accent lesson
Revisado: 07-27-17
What did you like best about Sisterchicks on the Loose!? What did you like least?
In August 1982, when fictional Penny first proposed she and Sharon go to Finland, I was actually on my way there to spend a year as an exchange student. As such, I know the country and people well (I lived 30 minutes from Porvoo where Penny's aunt lives). What drove me crazy was the weird accent the narrator was doing. It wasn't remotely like a Finnish accent. The intonation and stresses were all completely wrong, as were the pronunciations of several key Finnish words (like sauna!). It was something like a bastardized Swedish-Norwegian- very aggravating.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Robin Jones Gunn?
Someone Finnish!
Any additional comments?
The story was charming and the characters were familiar to me: those poor, sweet women with their small worlds that spin around church and their children. The message to do something to grow yourself away from the kids is so important. Step out of your comfort zone. Learn a new language. Meet people with a different perspective on the world.

Historia
Finally free after a desperately unhappy marriage, widowed Lady Dearing goes to a masquerade. She thinks it's just a lark, but matters turn serious when she kisses a costumed stranger who protected her from a drunken lout. Word leaks out, scandal escalates and she becomes the town's most infamous widow. Shunned by society, she retreats to her country estate. Having no children of her own, she finds joy in caring for children she's taken in from London's Foundling Hospital. But every night, she is haunted by the memory of the gallant stranger, whose seductive voice and gentle touch awakened desires she'd thought long dead.

Narrated like a simpering melodrama
Revisado: 11-09-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The story is typical enough for the romance genre, and I have no issues about the writing. The story, however, is totally destroyed by the narrator's breathy, staccato delivery.
Would you recommend Lady Dearing's Masquerade to your friends? Why or why not?
To read, but not to hear.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Robin Rowan?
I'd listen to Davina Porter narrate the phone book, so I'm sure she could have elevated the quality significantly.

Davina Porter's awesome narration strikes again
Revisado: 08-05-14
What did you love best about Written in My Own Heart's Blood?
I am a long time, slightly rabid, Outlander fan. I was delighted to finally have all the cliff hangers from Echo resolved, and happy to be able to spend more time with my 'Outlander family.' Love these characters.
What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Davina's accents and energetic narration makes the characters lift off the page.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Discover the adventure, passion, history, war, & time travel.of the Frasers!
Any additional comments?
Don't start with this book if you haven't read at least Echo in the Bone. Ideally, you should have read the 7 previous books..

Tolerable story, skip the narrator
Revisado: 06-27-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I was frequently challenged to figure out whether I was irritated more by the writing or the narrating. The story was all right, but I wouldn't recommend this audio book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Into the Wilderness?
When characters from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander appeared.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Horrendous accents. Intonations that didn't quite work. It was frequently painful.
