This take on the wizarding boarding school is suitable for young adults, and like the best of YA fiction, it is suitable for the rest of us as well. Absolutely a study of the anxieties, triumphs and terrora of adolescence, its themes of false meritocracy, colonial privilege and class divide are more than skin deep and are wrapped in a thoroughly enjoyable dystopian vision of what magic school might be like in a world where magic attracts monsters and a high school for those touched by magic requires daily struggle to survive. Using humor to avoid being maudlin, Novik manages to keep the tone light while walking the line between the real emotional depth of relationships, loneliness and awkwardness of youth and the real emotional depth of the struggle to survive or even thrive while in constant danger. The characters and their situation keep getting more interesting as the story evolves. A thoroughly enjoyable meal with enough plot to feel light and refreshing and enough depth and thought to be nutritious. If it sounds like an intriguing premise, I think you will not be disappointed.

The book focuses on maintaining a hopeful disposition while engaging in activism. The book uses specific examples to help reframe the purpose of activism from impossible end goals to achievable progress through dedication and celebration of the process.

In one of many insightful moments in this book, Harari describes spirituality, in opposition to religion, as a journey that questions pre-defined destinations. At it's best, that is exactly what he is doing here. Harari sounds sometimes as if he is dogmatically proposing new science and scientific-religious paradigms, but like any honest explorer Harari takes us to new places without ultimately insisting on any single interpretation of what the journey means. Inspired by and with knowledge of philosophy, cognitive science and information technology theory, Harari produces a well read understanding of where we might be going without leaving us comfortably certain of what it means once we get there, or even who the"we" will be if and when it occurs. Fortunately, while the journey is difficult (finish it before judging it), it is far more eloquently argued and explained in this book than it may seem to be in this review. If you want to face big questions of who we are, where we are going, where our ideologies that tend to answer these questions come from, and what really happens when our ideological paradigms shift, give it a try. At the end, think about sharing openly what the journey left you with. By then, you'll know what I mean.

Gaiman opens doors

The gods of the Norse are not well described as good or evil, at least not on their own terms. Gaiman explains this clearly and compelling in the introduction, lest there be a misunderstanding about what you are about to hear. While morality and virtue plays a clear role in these tales, it is often the case that none of the characters fully embody virtue. That is, these tales are told about fascinating characters with strengths and foibles that are both their power and their undoing in a world where the virtuous and the venal all come to the same end eventually. It is therefore not the destination but the journey through life we should look to, and Neil Gaiman excels at telling stories within journeys. Of course, there is an alarming lack of interesting, fully realized female characters. Gaiman acknowledges this and grieves for it in his introduction, for the loss of stories highlighting Frigg, Freya, Sif, and the other goddesses who seem themselves to have fascinating journeys that remain hidden from us. Perhaps Gaiman will take on the task of creating these stories for us, but this book was an interpretation of what we know from the texts that exist and that creation will need to wait for another book or another author.

Good pacing an character development. Some of the moments are as tense as anything in the series to date. The books really feel like a series, and the characters continue to be worth following.

Not as good as some of the previous but still quite enjoyable on the whole. The action is flatter. It does seem to be setting up some very interesting relationship conflicts. All in all a bridge book.

This is the point where the politics and intrigue come together with the mysteries and action. The combination improves the story and the characters, making the series more than a group of individual novels and into something really enjoyable.
