The Most Boring Exciting Story Ever Told

A grammar school book report on the subject would have been more interesting. The writing is not just dry, but desiccated. I was surprised to find this book was written in this century, as the style of writing is more reminiscent of the nineteenth century or earlier. The Plantagenets led England, and other countries at times, through some of the most incredible moments in history; yet this boring recitation manages to give it all of the interest of a newscaster reading from a teleprompter.

I do have some respect for the narrator: he managed to make it through this disaster without yawning.

Do yourself a favor. Read a proper history of the Plantagenets. Explore the very real exciting history of their era by reading Dan Jones' "The Plantagenets." The only thing you'll be sorry about is that you didn't skip Seward's book and read Jones' book first.

Another fantastic book by one of my favorite historians. Mr. Jones takes you by the hand and gently guides you through generations of complicated politics, scores of unfathomable personal motives, and one hell of a satisfactory story. He manages to brings the broad set of characters together and have their converging stories make sense in a way that a non-historian can easily understand. The people in this book are not just names on a page, Jones breathes life into each of them and we know them well by the end.

My only (small) criticism is that I wish Mr. Jones would re-record this audio book as he did with The Plantagenets. I had purchased the original copy of The Plantagenets and was quite dissatisfied with the narrator. When Mr. Jones re-released it narrating it himself, I purchased it again and enjoyed the book far more. Having the author read the book is such a treat and really lent an authenticity that was lacking in the original recording. So, if you happen to read your reviews, Mr. Jones, please consider my request. That said, I am looking forward to Henry V.

Wow. Where to start? Not at all what I expected. I enjoy even the most basic paranormal stories for the entertainment factor. I was expecting back stories of investigated cases. Literally, there are perhaps a dozen paragraphs for each of a few cases. Not one case is significantly detailed. I would estimate at least 85% of this book is Ed Warren emphasizing the differences between demonologists and people who study ghosts. According to Mr. Warren, he is/was the only "certified" demonologist who is/was not a member of the clergy. What prestigious entity "certified" him? I have no idea and I suspect no one does. A nauseating dissertation of his demon-expelling prowess and religious bona fides, this book is so ridiculous I am ashamed I listened through chapter nine. Ms. Warren? Merely clairvoyant wallpaper in this story.

The narrator? Meh.

I purchased this title on sale for about four dollars. Even if it had been free, I would still feel overcharged. Don't waste your time.

A very pleasant surprise as I was expecting a shallow overview and the same stereotypes highlighted by many historians. This comprehensive, yet concise, history of the Viking Age is detailed without getting bogged down in minutia. "The Sea Wolves" combines the stories of the famous (and, in some cases, infamous) personages of the era. Illuminating the journey from Scandinavia to Europe, Asia, and North America, this book is not only about raiding and conquest but also about the daily lives of the people and their eventual assimilation into other cultures. Having just completed "The Anglo-Saxons" by Marc Morris (also available on Audible), I found this book expanded my understanding of the era. The Vikings' cultural influence is still evident in many of our modern societies. Fascinating.

Mr. Barrett's narration was a little odd to me in the beginning but I came to enjoy his performance very much. For some reason I expected a narrator with a British accent and was startled to hear an American one. But I was completely won over within the first chapter. He has an understated style that nicely compliments the text without the weird, overly exuberant cadence used by many who narrate historical books.

A Love Letter from John Douglas to John Douglas

With every new book I am hopeful John Douglas will tell the story indicated by the title and every time (so far) Douglas spends the majority of the book congratulating himself for his intellectual superiority. If asked, Douglas would probably take credit for the creation of the Universe. His tendency to emphasize how prescient his profile of the perpetrator was lacks the humility to recognize the sharp detectives who tricked the suspect into revealing his identity. Douglas, of course, states his prediction of this outcome was made years before the identification of Rader.

You will learn nothing new here.

The narrator is horrific. Jason Klav frequently mispronounces common words. "Quantico" is pronounced "Kwan-TEE-ko" throughout. "Razed" becomes " razzed" (short "A" sound). These are but two examples.

Don't waste your time. Do something more interesting and productive, such as watching paint dry.
