Historia
Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares.

Fresh New Perspective on SciFi!
Revisado: 12-27-18
I came across this author on Twitter, from a list of up and coming minority authors.
I'm old enough to be stuck on the authors and their style of writing that I fell in love with as a young adult. So while I do like new stories, I have my "tastes", as it were. The concepts need to mesh well with the science, and the characters need to have decent depth and personality.
In this case, the concept really drew me in. The style of writing held me. The primary characters had good depth, and the supporting characters helped to round things out. You learn more about them in later books, but the relationships with the primary characters does have an impact. I was only disappointed that I had to wait for the next book! It is so good. I found myself wanting more!
It also naturally touches on important topics like culture perspectives, narrow-mindedness, and the ability to look past one's world view to see the beauty in something ugly. The interaction between Binti and the main alien antagonists, as well as the other Earth cultures attitudes towards her and her people, really highlight this in ways that add extra suspense due to delicate politics. Masterful.
I love the characters. They have a natural depth to them as the story unfolds. You get a sense of who they are from the dialogue as well as their choices and actions. It takes the "runaway" theme and weaves it into a wondrous tale of high science fiction with fascinating concepts like "treeing", and advanced mathematics that help unlock even older and more alien technology.
The narrator was well chosen, with a rich accented voice that matches the feel to the culture Binti belongs, and brings the experience into a whole other realm that makes the world very real for a listener.
I find myself re-listening to the series when ever a new book is released!
I've very excited to see/read/hear what else this author & narrator have in store for us all in the future.

Amazing Resource!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
YES!! It's funny, sarcastic AND informative. A subject that could be super dry and boring to those who are not conlangs is made fun, intriguing, and fascinating.
You'd need to get both the audio book AND the printed on (for visual folks) as there are visual clues that are important.
Who was your favorite character and why?
n/a It's an educational/informational book.
What does David J. Peterson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A human voice that is warm, friendly and funny.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
That languages have specific patterns to them, like songs. Where an accent or emphasis is on words in general is specific to the language itself. So , if you were knowledgeable enough, you could tell a conlang's native language OR know what irl language they based theirs on.
That and I learned what a conlang is as well!
Any additional comments?
If you are a writer that need to develop a language, read it. It's so worth it.

And still, the real battle lies ahead: they must confront Galbatorix. When they do, they will have to be strong enough to defeat him. And if they cannot, no one can.

80 percent good

I listened to it in my car. It was pretty epic until the last 20% or so. Author could have made a whole other "tie up loose ends" book with it as an outline.
Your miles may vary. I liked it. But the others were better.

My first introduction to this was PBS story break. Loved it then, love it now. Great sci-fi touches without being too heavy on the tech. interesting work up on the world.
