One of the best books I’ve listened to this year!
Revisado: 09-03-19
I highly recommend Lori Gottlieb’s book on not just therapy but humanity. As someone who who considers herself reflective and emotionally intelligent I still walked away from this book having learned SO much and with inspiration to ask myself some very difficult questions. The author’s vulnerability with her own therapy story was really interesting as it was shared simultaneously with the stories of several of her patients. This book, quite literally, made me laugh, cry and wonder. 10/10! Read (or listen), you won’t be sorry & it might just change the way you think.

In 1929, in the blue-collar city of Portsmouth, Ohio, a company built a swimming pool the size of a football field; named Dreamland, it became the vital center of the community. Now, addiction has devastated Portsmouth, as it has hundreds of small rural towns and suburbs across America - addiction like no other the country has ever faced. How that happened is the riveting story of Dreamland.

Wow! A Must Read!
Revisado: 05-10-19
A must read account of the rise of the opioid crisis in America. As I started this book I knew very little about opioid addiction other than that it had touched people in my life and seemed to suck out people’s souls. This book gave me so much more compassion for those struggling with addiction while educating me about the bigger picture (big pharma, pill mills, medical studies, etc) I truly don’t feel the reviews give this audiobook enough credit (even though they are all raving positive comments). I wish this book could be required reading for high school students, it’s so important.

Kim Miller is an immaculately put-together woman with a great career, a loving boyfriend, and a tidy apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. You would never guess that Kim grew up behind the closed doors of her family’s idyllic Long Island house, navigating between teetering stacks of aging newspapers, broken computers, and boxes upon boxes of unused junk festering in every room - the product of her father’s painful and unending struggle with hoarding. In this moving coming-of-age story, Kim brings to life her rat-infested home and her childhood consumed by concealing her father’s shameful secret from friends.

Fascinating & Raw
Revisado: 03-26-19
Kimberly Rae Miller's story open my eyes to hoarding. While of course I had seen clips of reality shows depicting houses filled with things, I never took the time to stop and think about the houses or really the people inside. There were times in Kimberly's story that my heart ached for her, but she told her story bravely never losing compassion for her parents. I was so intrigued by this book I listened to it all in a single day!

Historia
For too long, women have been told that we are terrible at being friends, that we can't help being cruel or competitive, or that we inevitably abandon each other for romantic partners. But we are rejecting those stereotypes and reclaiming the power of female friendship. In Text Me When You Get Home, journalist Kayleen Schaefer interviews more than 100 women about their BFFs, soul mates, girl gangs, and queens while tracing this cultural shift through the lens of pop culture.

Revisado: 04-15-18
What did you love best about Text Me When You Get Home?
While the history and evolution of female friendships as they are presented in the media is definitely intriguing, what I loved most about this book was the constant reminder of how valuable our friendships are. I enjoyed the way the author intertwined her own friendships with pop culture references and famous friendships.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book will make you want to call up your best friends and tell them how much you love them!
Any additional comments?
One thing that did sort of irk me about this book was the idea the author seemed to perpetuate that wanting to be married or have a romantic relationship is somehow forsaking your friendships. As a proud feminist, I understand the idea that women are taught romance is above all else, but the author allows the pendulum to swing too far in the opposite direction.

Much More Fun than I Expected
Revisado: 04-15-18
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wasn't expecting much more than a light hearted beach read from Fitness Junkie, however I was pleasantly surprised by the satirical comedy I found. As someone who loosely follows health & wellness trends I found myself smirking and laughing as I listened to this novel. Many of the ridiculous concepts in the novel are based off of actual wellness and fitness trends making the novel even more fun to devour. The storyline was relatively feel-good and predictable but the little references and moments throughout made the book highly enjoyable. I truly wasn't ready for the novel to end when it did!

I wanted to Love this Book
Revisado: 12-20-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The beginning of this book caught my attention but I stopped listening 11 hours in (close to the end of the novel) because I found myself wishing I could listen to something else on my commute home. I wanted to love this book but thought it dragged on a bit too long.

Historia
From the author of When We Lost Our Heads, a spellbinding story about two gifted orphans - in love with each other since they can remember - whose childhood talents allow them to rewrite their future. The Lonely Hearts Hotel is a love story with the power of legend. An unparalleled tale of charismatic pianos, invisible dance partners, radicalized chorus girls, drug-addicted musicians, brooding clowns, and an underworld whose economy hinges on the price of a kiss. In a landscape like this, it takes great creative gifts to thwart one’s origins.

IMPECCABLE BEAUTIFUL Writing, Interesting Story
Revisado: 05-24-17
What did you like best about The Lonely Hearts Hotel? What did you like least?
The author truly has a gift crafting sentences that feel like poetry. If you like flowery, descriptive writing (as I do) you will find yourself pausing and replaying certain aspects of this book because they are so beautiful.
Would you recommend The Lonely Hearts Hotel to your friends? Why or why not?
I was really torn on this book. While I thought it was very well written and the story was interesting enough, I found so much unnecessary and somewhat disturbing sexual content. I am not a prude or afraid of graphic sexual content but much of it felt perverted without aiding the storyline. I would recommend this book to some but definitely not to young readers or to anyone who could not handle the pedophilic content.

Just when she's thinking about hightailing it back to Chicago, she gets an email from a person calling themselves Somebody/Nobody (SN for short), offering to help her navigate the wilds of Wood Valley High School. Any additional comments?
A delightful young adult/teenage love story with more depth than your average romance. At 25 I didn't find the depictions of high school overly cheesy or irrelevant. I smiled as I recalled the awkwardness and joy that comes along with being 16. Definitely happy I listened to this book especially after listening to how it related to the author's own experience losing her mother at 14.

Alarming wake up call on Rape Culture in America

At times I found myself tearing up as I listened to victims accounts of trauma. This book was undeniably difficult to listen to at some points but the message was strong and important. I wish this book was required reading for all Americans.
