Historia
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Good insight into journalism today
Revisado: 11-20-23
Smart and easy to understand narrative that felt compelling from beginning to end. Good insight into the state of journalism and democracy in one country of the Global South, and her insights are interesting and thought provoking.

Historia
The British Museum devoted itself to acquiring historical artifacts that showcased the influence and prestige of the British Empire, as well as the facilities in which to house them, surviving wars, financial challenges, controversies, and political pressures. In the process, it became one of the British Empire’s greatest cultural jewels, and to this day, it holds the distinctions of being the world’s first national public museum and the most venerated museum of its kind in Britain.

Just ok
Revisado: 10-26-22
A general overview that gives insight into the early beginnings but doesn’t wade much into more complex debates around the museum’s collection.

Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Powerful, dark sequel that stands on its own

Moving take relevant to our time
Revisado: 08-22-21
I may have enjoyed this sequel to the original, partly because it seemed to dig deep while being simple and moving. It’s impossible not to see our own time reflected in the words and the characters were complex and clear.
