Historia
In this classic account of madness, Michel Foucault shows once and for all why he is one of the most distinguished European philosophers since the end of World War II. Madness and Civilization, Foucault's first book and his finest accomplishment, will change the way in which you think about society. Evoking shock, pity, and fascination, it might also make you question the way you think about yourself.

Don’t bother
Revisado: 11-25-22
I lasted 30 seconds. Foucault is so thick and hard to work through to begin with. No offense to the voice actor, but my brain having to work through the actor’s accent and melodic tone was too hard. I couldn’t get the actual content. Disappointing as I really wanted to listen to the content as a means of understanding more deeply key ideas about disability in society.

Re: If you love Saint Francis
Revisado: 11-25-22
This was a great look at Saint Francis’s life. I came away feeling like I understood more dimensions of his life and what made him “click”. However, the narration was a bit over-dramatic in parts. I loved the sound effects but sometimes the dialog was just way over-done. Also, the character development was a little choppy. His mother weeps and longs for him when he takes his vow of poverty and leaves to live the rest of his life devoted to the work of Christ. She wasn’t *that* sad when he went off to war as a youth. She was presented as loving him so much that I find it hard she would barely make a peep when her teenager was going into battle. But, this is not meant to be high literature. It’s entertaining. The sound effects make it easy to imagine being there and help you understand these people in their historic times.

Historia
Fueled by a powerful curiosity - and by a need to see, feel, and hear, firsthand and close-up - Michael Crichton's journeys have carried him into worlds diverse and compelling - swimming with mud sharks in Tahiti, tracking wild animals through the jungle of Rwanda. This is a record of those travels - an exhilarating quest across the familiar and exotic frontiers of the outer world, a determined odyssey into the unfathomable, spiritual depths of the inner world.

Very entertaining!
Revisado: 11-17-22
This is more than just a book of travel stories. Crichton shares deep insights about humanity, self, society, the world. Whether he is describing his days in medical school or a trek up some mountain, he weaves in his incredible perceptions and sensitivity. I highly recommend this book. And the narration was very good too.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Excellent and riveting
Revisado: 01-09-22
I have read many books about Shackleton. It’s a special interest of mine. So when I saw Lansing’s book, I thought “What can one more book contribute?” I’m glad I listened to it. This book tells the tale in a new way. You will feel as though you are there, your hands freezing, your stomach grumbling after eating a small ration of hard frozen penguin, your body soaking as you try to sleep on a wet slab of ice. I could not put the story down and listened all night.

Too Technical For Me But Maybe Not You
Revisado: 01-03-22
I loved hearing about the monks. I was fascinated to hear about their daily lives and their intellectual pursuits. The author makes a very interesting point that folks were doing science back then, it’s just that because they just did it to understand God’s plan better we don’t count it as science. Unfortunately the level of technical detail is so intense I couldn’t finish the book. If you are “into” science instruments and math and how astronomical features are measured and how calendars are constructed you will love it. But I couldn’t follow it after the first few basics.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Fascinating perspective
Revisado: 01-02-22
This book leaves me with much to wonder about. Such a sweeping overview could have resorted to simple and stereotypic tropes but Harari skillfully weaves a unique if broad interpretation of human history. Highly recommend!
