Historia
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

Fantastic Overview of Mesopotamian civilization and its relevance
Revisado: 09-09-24
Some might be a bit disappointed at the lack of deep dives into Babylon itself, but this is unfortunately inevitable due to the fact that Babylon has sunk into groundwater.
However, this book does a better job of getting across the wonder of Mesopotamian civilization and its modern relevance than anything I've read. It really imparts up on the reader strong inoressions of the character of the societies in Mesopotamia and Assyria and gives an entertaining overview of its chronology, personalities, culture, and archeology.

Historia
In the first multivolume biography of Abraham Lincoln to be published in decades, Lincoln scholar Michael Burlingame offers a fresh look at the life of one of America's greatest presidents. Incorporating the field notes of earlier biographers along with decades of research in multiple manuscript archives and long-neglected newspapers, this remarkable work will both alter and reinforce our current understanding of America's 16th president.

Fantastically in-depth
Revisado: 11-19-23
A book made for people like me who crave detail in their nonfiction and biographies especially. It's full of amusing anecdotes, insight into antebellum America and the West especially, and really brings Lincoln's personality and world to life with vivid description.
I found the psychoanalyzing incredibly annoying at times ("Lincoln may have mistrusted women because of his abandonment issues following his mother's death" and such) but the author's use of direct quotations and citing of first and secondhand sources throughout the book really makes it stand out among other well-regarded biographies.

Great narrative biography
Revisado: 09-06-23
McCullough is one of the greats, a wonderful introduction to modern US politics. Five stars just for the narrator's FDR impression alone.

Nathan Long and Jonathan Keeble deliver
Revisado: 01-13-23
I was a bit worried by the change in author and the GW-mandated time skip. But this might actually be my favorite Gotrek & Felix novel since Skavenslayer. There's some serious character development and high stakes, and the titular characters feel like the same people that they were in the King novels. The narration is flawless as always.
