Tried Really Hard to Like It
Revisado: 09-20-24
I've been very disappointed by this series. I'm uninterested in the "girlfriend" narratives which seem to dominate each book. Much of the prose violates the Chekhov principle that everything mentioned needs to contribute to the story: rather there is a lot of filler that seems intended to inflate the word count. An example is a very detailed description of how a Marine reporting to a superior officer renders a rifle salute (actually from a later volume in the series that I returned): who cares? How does that detail advance the story? Another example is how often the titles, ranks, service branch, and other such details are repeated ad nauseam after the initial use. I tried really hard to get to the parts of the story that should have described action, but was repeatedly disappointed, finally returning Books 3 and 4 in the series.
I was also disappointed by the stilted narration.

Historia
Commanding a combined US-South Korea force, the newly promoted US Navy hero Dan Lenson wonders if his embattled group can possibly keep sea lanes open in the Central Pacific as he tries to turn the tide and buy time for the Allies to regroup. But when his own flagship comes under ferocious attack, he must leave it to assume command elsewhere - without knowing when he'll be able to return. In the meantime, SEAL operator Teddy Oberg, escaping from a hellish POW camp, heads west through desolate mountains toward what he hopes will be freedom.
