Soft account of hard times
Revisado: 08-18-12
Would you listen to The Kitchen House again? Why?
Yes....it was an inclusive story through the eyes of luvenia....the writer did capture the helpless position of the black male in those dark days....
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mama Mae.....she was strong and nurturing...she was the solid rock foundation.
What about Orlagh Cassidy and Bahni Turpin ’s performance did you like?
I did enjoy them...I found the "he said, she said" references a bit distracting at first but then came to ignore them....this was not a negative on their performance as it is a critique of the writing....
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I felt sad and the extreme helplessness of all the characters....none of the people on the plantation had any power over their circumstance....the white plantation owner was too prone to leave most decisions in the hand of the mean and wicked men they placed in charge of the fields......and i was very rudely awakened to the vulnerability of the women when I realized venia could be placed in a mental hospital ...purely on her husbands request ....

Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Charmed by words and voice
Revisado: 08-18-12
What did you love best about The Hiding Place?
Looking back on her life growing up with her parents and the Tantas. The love and warmth and candor of that time was very heartwarming and relatable....I listened to the early time several times for its nostalgia.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Corrie was my favorite because she was so human and someone I could relate to......not so faith driven that she was saintly.
What does Wanda McCaddon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her voice just lulls me...the way she spoke the name corrie was magical to my ears...I know these characters because their personalities where painted with soft strokes of vocal sounds and tones, pitches and speech patterns.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the family had the argument because nollie's daughter couldn't lie to the Gestapo....when Corrie was chiming in with her reasoning, it sounded very life-like....
Any additional comments?
I believe this was a story of great substance and the value was realized based on the talent of the story teller....she truly made the book come to life,
