Historia
Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by a Renaissance master. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

Historia
In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family’s clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected.

So disappointing
Revisado: 03-10-22
I had high hopes for this book, but it fell flat on all accounts. First of all, this is not fantasy fiction, there are no fantastical elements aside from two characters seeing ghosts and making light - but for absolute no use.. Second, the “moral” of this book was just not making any sense - do anything as long as it fits your desire / obkective in life, no matter how many people you hurt or even if that actually makes you happy or not. And finally, the narrator’s pronouncation of foreign words was just irratating. Like, everytime she says Hunan, it sounded like a question; all male characters sounded like constipated little children.. it was irritating all around.
I think Poppy Wars series is a much better choice for fantastical fiction account of Chinese dynastian history.. Do not bother with this one.

Revisado: 04-14-21
If you enjoy the blues and want to hear real life stories about some of the greatest blues legends, this is the book for you!! There is so much joy, loyalty, and overall just pure love for the music that is pouring out of each story. Also having studied and lived in the south side of Chicago in the mid 90s and actually having been to some the legendary venues mentioned, it was like a trip down the memory lane - with one of the grand masters of Chicago Blues ❤️

Historia
A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets 16-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Narration just didnt work for me
Revisado: 01-15-21
Story was ok but it was more for an audience of older children rather than adults, it wasn’t even YA which I actually enjoy. But for me the narration was the deal-breaker. It was very off-putting, it sounded like all the peculiar children were either halfwits or illiterate peasants or sometimes both.. I am not a native speaker so maybe it is just that the accents simply did not hit the right notes with me..

Historia
For six years Jim and Jamie Dutcher lived intimately with a pack of wolves, gaining their trust as no one has before. In this book the Dutchers reflect on the virtues they observed in wolf society and behavior. Each chapter exemplifies a principle, such as kindness, teamwork, playfulness, respect, curiosity, and compassion. Their heartfelt stories combine into a thought-provoking meditation on the values shared between the human and the animal world.

Not what the cover suggests
Revisado: 12-30-20
I am already an animal lover, and actually wanted to read and learn more about wild wolves, and was even looking forward to learning from them. This book is however is not that. This is a collection of observations and stories from living with a pack of semi-domesticated wolves in a fenced-off reserve. These wolves live alongside their human counterparts, interact with them, even though the authors claim they do not interfere with their lives, they look after them until a certain age and then release/introduce them back into the pack - by that time the wolves are already friendly with the humans, they run around them while they go about doing their daily chores. The authors feed the wolves with already killed carcasses, there is no other animal/danger around, the wolves behave more or less like domesticated herd of dogs..
What actually bothered me was that the book was a case against people hunting/hurting wild wolves, and so there were a lot of heartbreaking tales of how humans harmed these beautiful creatures. I already love these animals and I really did not sign up for such harrowing stories - and in my opinion whoever hunts and kills these (or any other) animals will not go ahead and read this book and then change their minds.. so there was no point.. and it got too repetitive after third chapter..
I gave 3 stars just for the endearing Sawtooth Wolf Pack I get to meet through this book.. if not for them other pointless propaganda and actual lack of what the title suggests would get itself 1 star only.

Deciphering an ancient alchemy book is more difficult than Zoe Faust bargained for. If Zoe isn't able to unlock an unusual alchemy book's secrets soon, the French gargoyle will remain awake but trapped in stone forever.

So much repetition
Revisado: 12-17-20
The book could be reduced by two thirds and not lose one bit of the actual content.. the repetition from the first book to this one was bad enough - I mean recapping for the non-readers of the first book once is enough, but retelling the entire backstory more than half a dozen times is tiring... when the plot of this book started to pick up, we started to rereading the previous chapter once again in the next chapter.. I mean surely the publishers could have assigned an editor to this book..
On the plus side, I enjoyed the narration, and also the vegan dishes, french accents, the gargoyle and a bit of mystery.. I had liked listening to the first book as a soothing backdrop when I was doing things in the house, and this one wasnt bad for that either :) I will try the third book which free in the Plus Catalogue but not sure if I will spent any more credits on the 4th book..

Not the right format
Revisado: 10-22-20
I really enjoy Marcus Samuelsson’s cooking and tv shows, but this is not suitable show format for audible.. didn’t get any joy out of it, too many mixed background noises, with vague references to foods that are being cooked (this would have been fine on a tv show with visuals to support the conversation, here it was just distracting and confusing) and sounded too much like a Red Rooster Harlem advertorial.. all in all my second audible ever that I couldnt finish..

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Cut 4-5 hours of material and it could be good
Revisado: 10-16-20
I know this is a classic and all, but I dozed off during the last 5 hours most of the time. It was so long and unnecessary repetition of so basic happenings.. and in the last 40 minutes everything happenned all at once.. seems the author just got bored of himself and decided to finish it off as quickly as possible :)
And the narration didn’t sit well with me either..

Great memoir, monotonous narration
Revisado: 09-07-20
Contrary to some reviews, this book is not just about surfing though there is a lot of surfing and a lot of spesific terminology I didn't even know before.. But along with the surf, you go through Hawaii, San Francisco, South Africa in very specific and (for me) interesting time periods, and you get a sensation as if you are really there,. I truly enjoyed the journey and also the passion for surfing along with all its intricacies..
But the narration... it was so monotonous, without any feeling, joy, frustration, urgency, anything.. I actually listened author's/narrator's other audible memoir (Climbing with Mollie) and that was perfectly fine - not great but fine. But in this one, his voice was just flat or slightly bored with his own narration. Also there were a lot of edits/later insertions. Sometimes you hear someone else (or better recording of the same narrator) for a sentence or even for a word and then switch back.
Overall I think good writers should let the reading of their books to good narrators..
